Duplex 2507 stainless steel is a high-performance, super duplex alloy characterized by its exceptional strength and excellent corrosion resistance. Comprising low carbon (up to 0.03%), chromium (~25%), nickel (~7%), and molybdenum (~4%), this alloy is engineered to meet the rigorous demands of industries such as chemical processing, petrochemicals, and marine environments. It stands out for its remarkable resistance to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking, and its rich chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content offer unparalleled protection against pitting, crevice, and general corrosion.
How Is Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel Made?
- The production of Duplex 2507 stainless steel mirrors the methods used for other advanced high-alloy steels. Initially, scrap steel is melted in an electric arc furnace, followed by the addition of specific alloys. The molten steel is then transferred to an AOD (argon oxygen decarburization) converter, where critical processes such as decarburization, sulfur refinement, and gas elimination take place.
- During the AOD process, nitrogen is typically introduced to the steel. Subsequently, the steel is moved to the ladle furnace for fine-tuning of its inclusions.
- After these initial steps, the molten steel proceeds to the casting process, forming either large ingots or continuously cast blooms. These solid steel forms are further refined through reheating and forging or rolling to achieve the desired thickness. To ensure a uniform internal structure, solution annealing is performed, followed by rapid water quenching.
- Fabrication of Duplex 2507 pipe materials involves both hot and cold forming techniques. For hot forming, temperatures should range between 1024 °C and 1232 °C, followed by solution annealing at 1052-1125 °C and a swift water quench. In cold forming, which includes bending, deep drawing, extruding, and pressing, subsequent heat treatment involving solution annealing and quenching is necessary.
