CORROSION RESISTANCE:

  • Boasting superior endurance, this alloy withstands corrosive attacks more effectively than any standard hardenable stainless steel.
  • Its corrosion resistance is often comparable to that of Alloy 304 in most media.
  • Exhibits reliable corrosion resistance in chemical, petroleum, dairy, and food processing industries.
  • However, it may be subject to crevice or pitting attacks if exposed to stagnant sea water for prolonged periods.

WELDABILITY:

  • This alloy can be successfully welded using most common fusion and resistance methods.
  • Note: It should not be joined via oxyacetylene welding.
  • Generally, no pre-heating is required before welding.
  • Ensure the inter-pass temperature does not exceed 248°F.
  • Enhanced toughness is achieved in the weld post-complete heat treatment.

ELEVATED TEMPERATURE USE:

  • Displays excellent resistance to oxidation up to approximately 1100°F.
  • Prolonged exposure to elevated temperatures may result in reduced toughness in precipitation-hardened conditions.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

  • When forging, heat uniformly to 2150-2200°F and maintain for half an hour per inch.
  • Optimal hot forming temperature range is 650-900°F, retaining its austenitic structure.
  • For ideal hardening conditions, re-heat treat forgings at 1875-1925°F.
  • Cool the forgings to below 90°F to ensure grain refinement.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

  • Alloy 17-4 is suited to mild operations as its annealed (solution-treated) condition renders it hard.
  • For severe cold working, heat treat the material to condition H1150 to prevent cracking.
  • A bend radius exceeding 7T is generally required.
  • To enhance stress corrosion resistance post-cold forming, re-aging at the precipitation-hardening temperature is advised.

MACHINABILITY:

  • This alloy can be effectively machined in both solution-treated and precipitation-hardening conditions.
