431 Stainless Steel Bar Material boasts exceptional corrosion resistance against a diverse array of corrosive media. While it offers some resilience to saltwater in cooler southern waters, it may not fare as well in warmer tropical conditions. Generally, the corrosion resistance of 431 Round Bar Material is comparable to, or slightly less than, that of 304 Grade Material. Optimal performance is achieved when the material maintains a smooth surface in its hardened and tempered state.
This material resists scaling in intermittent service up to 925°C and in continuous service up to 870°C. However, it is generally not recommended for use at temperatures exceeding the relevant tempering temperature due to a potential reduction in mechanical properties.
Full annealing is impractical for this grade as it tends to harden even during slow cooling. For process annealing, heat the material to 620-660°C and then air cool.
Hardening is achieved by heating the material to 980-1065°C, holding it for approximately 30 minutes, and then quenching in air or oil. Pre-heating at 760-790°C can be beneficial for complex parts or those already hardened. Tempering should be done to meet mechanical requirements, with specific temperatures detailed in the accompanying table.
The tempering range of 425-600°C should be avoided due to the risk of decreased impact toughness, although this effect is less pronounced compared to most other martensitic grades.
Welding this material is challenging due to the risk of cracking. A pre-heat of 200-300°C is recommended before welding. While Grade 410 filler rod can be used, Grades 308L, 309, or 310 will produce more ductile welds if matching properties are not essential. Post-weld heat treatment at 650°C is advisable.
In its annealed state, this grade is relatively easy to machine. However, once hardened beyond 30HRC, machining becomes more difficult. The Ugima Improved Machinability version of Grade 431 offers notable improvements in machining speeds and tool life.
Common applications include nuts and bolts, propeller shafting, pump shafts, beater bars, and marine hardware.
These properties are specified for bar products under ASTM A276. While similar properties are specified for other products like plates and forgings, they are not necessarily identical and vary according to their respective specifications.
Stainless steel round bars are extensively used across various sectors, from construction to automotive parts. To cater to this wide range of applications, Daxun Alloys offers stainless steel round bars in multiple grades and sizes. Our advanced cutting service ensures precise adherence to your specifications each time.
