GENERAL PROPERTIES
Duplex 2205 is a remarkable two-phase, ferritic, austenitic stainless steel, enriched with 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. It stands as the preeminent duplex stainless steel grade, with a yield strength that is double that of standard austenitic grades. This alloy boasts exceptional fatigue strength and unparalleled resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion, even in the harshest environments.
APPLICATIONS
- Chemical processing, transport, and storage - ideal for pressure vessels, tanks, piping, and heat exchangers
- Oil and gas exploration and processing equipment - perfect for piping, tubing, and heat exchangers
- Marine and other high chloride environments
- Effluent scrubbing systems
- Pulp and paper industry - suitable for digesters, bleaching equipment, and stock-handling systems
- Cargo tanks for ships and trucks
- Food processing equipment
- Biofuels plants
STANDARDS
- ASTM/ASME: A240 UNS S32205/S31803
- EURONORM: 1.4462 X2CrNiMoN 22.5.3
- AFNOR: Z3 CrNi 22.05 AZ
- DIN: W.Nr 1.4462
CORROSION RESISTANCE
- Thanks to its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, Duplex 2205 exhibits superior corrosion resistance compared to 316 and 316L in most environments.
- The alloy's chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen components also endow it with exceptional resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in oxidizing and acidic solutions.
- It is resistant to chloride stress corrosion cracking up to temperatures of about 302°F (150°C).
- The ferrite phase in Duplex 2205 ensures excellent performance in caustic environments.
HEAT RESISTANCE
- Duplex 2205, like other duplex stainless steels, showcases commendable oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.
- However, it is subject to embrittlement when exposed to temperatures above 572°F (300°C) for short durations and is not recommended for use above this temperature.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- This alloy possesses excellent weldability.
- It is generally advisable to weld with filler metal to avoid excessive ferrite formation.
HEAT TREATMENT
- The annealing temperature range for Duplex 2205 is between 1868 and 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
- While it cannot be hardened by heat treatment, Duplex 2205 does work-harden.
- Special considerations are necessary to compensate for its higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
- Most producers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature of 2010 to 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). If the workpiece is not compact, cooler edges may risk cracking.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING
- Duplex 2205 showcases good formability in various fabrications. Its high strength can pose challenges; even with adequate power, higher spring-back due to the grade's high strength must be considered.
MACHINABILITY
Duplex 2205 stainless steel presents a slight challenge in machining when compared to the 300 series austenitic stainless steels. The need for higher cutting forces leads to accelerated tool wear. The following machining guidelines can help optimize the process: A) Utilize powerful, rigid machines with exceptionally secure mounting of both tools and workpieces, B) Minimize vibration by keeping the tool extension to a bare minimum, C) Opt for a nose radius on the tool that balances sharpness and strength, particularly for carbides, and D) Design machining sequences to ensure the depth of cut consistently goes below the work-hardened layer from previous passes.
Features of 2205 Stainless Steel Coils
- Type 2205 is a duplex (austenitic/ferritic) stainless steel that incorporates chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen. These elements enhance performance and corrosion resistance, offering substantial improvements over 304 and 316 stainless steel. The alloy's dual-phase microstructure, combined with these additives, provides exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and chloride-induced crevice corrosion. Alloy 2205 withstands oxidation up to 980°C for specified applications, although prolonged exposure to temperatures between 300°C and 1000°C may cause brittleness. This versatile alloy is available in strip, coil, and sheet forms, suitable for a wide range of applications.
Common Surface Finishes of Stainless Steel Coils
The surface finish of 201 stainless steel coils varies based on cold rolling processes and subsequent surface treatments. Available finishes include NO.1, 2B, 4, HL, 6, 8, BA, TR hard, heavy rolling bright 2H, polished bright, and other specialized treatments:
- NO.1: This surface is achieved through hot rolling followed by heat treatment and pickling. It removes black oxide scale formed during hot rolling and heat treatment, resulting in a silvery white matte finish. This surface is primarily used in industries where high surface gloss is not necessary, such as the alcohol, chemical, and large container industries.
- 2B: In contrast to the 2D surface, the 2B finish is obtained by light rolling, giving it a brighter appearance. The surface roughness Ra value typically ranges from 0.1 to 0.5μm. This versatile finish is ideal for chemical, papermaking, petroleum, medical industries, and even architectural applications like building curtain walls.
- TR Hard Surface: TR stainless steel, also known as hard steel, includes grades like 304 and 301. It is designed for high-strength and high-hardness applications such as railway vehicles, conveyor belts, springs, and washers. The work hardening characteristics of austenitic stainless steel are leveraged to enhance the strength and hardness through cold rolling. To achieve the desired flatness, the hard material is lightly rolled without subsequent annealing, resulting in the distinctive TR hard rolled surface.
- Re-Rolled Bright 2H: Post-rolling, the stainless steel strip undergoes bright annealing, often in a continuous annealing line that allows rapid cooling as the strip moves at 60-80m/min. This results in a bright 2H re-rolled surface finish.
- No. 4: The No. 4 surface offers an exceptional polishing effect, surpassing the brightness of the No. 3 finish. Achieved through polishing cold-rolled stainless steel plates with a 2D or 2B surface, followed by a sanding belt with a particle size of 150-180#, this method ensures a surface roughness (Ra) between 0.2 and 1.5μm. Widely utilized in diverse applications such as restaurants, cooking equipment, medical devices, architectural decoration, and containers, the No. 4 surface stands out for its versatility and superior quality.
- HL: The HL surface, or hairline finish, is meticulously described by the Japanese JIS standard as a continuous hairline abrasive surface obtained via a 150-240# abrasive belt. While the Chinese GB3280 standard lacks clarity, the HL finish is predominantly employed in architectural decoration, enhancing aesthetics in elevators, escalators, and exterior walls.
- No. 6: The No. 6 surface is an advanced finish achieved by further polishing the No. 4 surface using a Tampico brush or W63 grit abrasive material, as specified in the GB2477 standard. This process results in a surface with a splendid metallic luster, gentle reflection, and non-imaging properties, making it ideal for curtain walls, tassel decorations, and cooking tools.
- BA: BA, or Bright Annealed, is a surface finish achieved by heat treatment in a protective atmosphere post-cold rolling, ensuring oxidation-free, glossy results. Polished with high-precision smooth rollers, the BA surface achieves a remarkable surface roughness of 0.05-0.1μm, closely resembling a mirror. This finish is perfect for food utensils, household appliances, medical instruments, automotive parts, and decorative applications.
- No. 8: The No. 8 finish, or mirror surface, boasts maximum reflectivity devoid of abrasive particles. Commonly known in the stainless steel processing industry as 8K board, this finish typically uses BA material as raw input. With minimal polishing, the mirror surface emerges stunningly beautiful, frequently employed in building entrances and interior decor.
