GENERAL PROPERTIES
Duplex 2205 is a two-phase, ferritic, austenitic stainless steel that boasts an impressive alloy composition of 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. This makes it the most widely used duplex stainless steel grade, offering double the yield strength of standard austenitic grades. It stands out with exceptional fatigue strength and superior resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion, even under the most challenging conditions.

CORROSION RESISTANCE
- Thanks to its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, Duplex 2205 offers superior corrosion resistance over 316 and 316L in most environments.
- The alloy's chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen composition ensures high resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in oxidizing and acidic solutions.
- Resilient to chloride stress corrosion cracking and temperatures up to approximately 302°F (150°C).
- The presence of ferrite enhances the performance of Duplex 2205 in caustic environments.
HEAT RESISTANCE
- Duplex 2205, similar to other duplex stainless steels, exhibits good oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.
- However, it is susceptible to embrittlement if exposed to temperatures above 572°F (300°C) for even short periods, thus it is not recommended for use above this threshold.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- Duplex 2205 is known for its excellent weldability.
- Generally, it should not be welded without filler metal to avoid excessive ferrite content.
HEAT TREATMENT
- The annealing temperature range is between 1868 and 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
- Duplex 2205 cannot be hardened by heat treatment, but it does work-harden.
- Special attention is required to counteract a higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
- Most producers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). For non-compact shapes, cooler edge regions may risk cracking.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING
- Duplex 2205 exhibits excellent formability across various fabrication methods. However, its high strength can present challenges. Even with robust equipment, one must account for greater spring-back due to the grade's impressive strength.
MACHINABILITY
Processing Duplex 2205 is somewhat more challenging than the 300 series austenitic stainless steels, necessitating higher cutting forces, which accelerates tool wear. Key machining guidelines include: A) Employ powerful, rigid machines with strong, stable mounting of tools and workpieces, B) Minimize vibration by maintaining minimal tool extension, C) Utilize a nose radius on the tool that is just sufficient for carbide sharpness while ensuring adequate strength, and D) Plan machining sequences to consistently achieve a cut depth beneath the work-hardened layer from preceding passes.
Features of 2205 Stainless Steel Coils
- Type 2205 is a high-performance duplex (austenitic/ferritic) stainless steel alloyed with chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen. It outperforms 304 and 316 stainless steel in terms of performance and corrosion resistance. The alloy's austenite/ferrite microstructure, enhanced by alloying elements, provides resistance to stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and ***-induced crevice corrosion. Alloy 2205 can withstand oxidation up to 980°C but is suitable for specific applications only, as prolonged exposure to temperatures between 300°C and 1000°C may cause brittleness. This versatile material is ideal for various applications, available in strip, coil, and sheet forms.
Common Surfaces of Stainless Steel Coils
The surface finish of 201 stainless steel coils varies based on the cold rolling methods and subsequent surface treatments. Available surface treatments include NO.1, 2B, 4, HL, 6, 8, BA, TR hard, heavy rolling bright 2H, polished bright, among others:
- NO.1: This surface is achieved after hot rolling, heat treatment, and pickling of stainless steel strips. The treatment removes black oxide scale formed during hot rolling and heat treatment. The No. 1 surface, characterized by its silvery white and matte finish, is primarily used in heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant industries where high surface gloss is not required-such as the alcohol, chemical industries, and large container manufacturing.
- 2B: In contrast to the 2D surface, the 2B surface is smoothed with a light roller, resulting in a brighter finish. The surface roughness Ra value ranges from 0.1 to 0.5μm, making it highly adaptable across various processing types. The 2B surface is ideal for industries like chemical processing, papermaking, petroleum, medical applications, and building curtain walls.
- TR Hard Surface: TR stainless steel, also known as hard steel, includes grades like 304 and 301. These are used in applications requiring high strength and hardness-such as railway vehicles, conveyor belts, springs, and washers. The cold working process, such as rolling, enhances the strength and hardness of austenitic stainless steel plates. Unlike the smooth 2B base surface, TR hard material is gently rolled by a few to several tens of percent without annealing post-rolling, resulting in a hard surface directly from the cold rolling process.
- Re-rolled Bright 2H: After the precise rolling operation, the stainless steel strip undergoes a bright annealing process, utilizing a state-of-the-art continuous annealing line to ensure rapid cooling of the strip. Moving along the line at velocities ranging from 60-80 meters per minute, the stainless steel strip achieves a superior 2H re-rolled bright surface finish, showcasing exceptional luster and durability.
- No. 4: The No. 4 surface provides an impressive polishing effect, offering a brighter finish compared to No. 3. This finish is achieved by meticulously polishing a cold-rolled stainless steel plate with a 2D or 2B surface, followed by further refinement using a sanding belt with a particle size of 150-180#. The resultant surface roughness (Ra) measures between 0.2 and 1.5μm. The No. 4 finish is widely acclaimed for its application in high-demand environments such as restaurants, medical equipment, architectural decoration, containers, and sophisticated cooking equipment.
- HL: The HL surface, also renowned as the hairline finish, is defined by the Japanese JIS standard as a continuous hairline abrasive surface, achieved using a 150-240# abrasive belt. Although the Chinese GB3280 standard provides less clarity, the HL finish remains a top choice for architectural decoration, including elevators, escalators, and exterior walls, due to its distinctive aesthetic appeal.
- No. 6: The No. 6 surface is an advanced finish achieved through further polishing of the No. 4 surface using a Tampico brush or W63 grit abrasive material, as specified in the GB2477 standard. This process imparts a surface with a refined metallic luster, soft texture, reduced reflectivity, and no imaging properties, making it ideal for applications in curtain walls, tassel decorations, and premium cooking supplies.
- BA: BA, or Bright Annealed, is a surface treatment post cold rolling that involves annealing in a protective atmosphere to maintain the surface's oxidation-free, glossy appearance. A high-precision smooth roller further enhances the surface brightness, achieving a surface roughness of 0.05-0.1μm, closely resembling a mirror. BA surfaces are versatile, finding use in food utensils, household appliances, medical equipment, automotive parts, and decorative applications.
- No. 8: The No. 8 surface, also known as the mirror finish, offers maximum reflectivity with no abrasive particles. Often referred to as 8K board in the stainless steel processing industry, BA material serves as the raw component for mirror processing. Following this process, the surface becomes exquisitely beautiful, making it a preferred choice for building entrances and luxurious interior decorations.
