CORROSION RESISTANCE:

• Exhibits superior resistance when compared to 304, thanks to its elevated chromium and molybdenum content, making it ideal for a variety of atmospheric conditions and corrosive environments.

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:

• Boasts excellent weldability with all standard fusion techniques, whether using filler metals or not.
• Heavy welded sections of Grade 316 necessitate post-weld annealing for peak corrosion resistance, a step not required for Grade 316L.

HEAT TREATMENT:

• Annealing range is between 1900°F and 2100°F (1038°C to 1149°C).
• Cannot be hardened by heat treatment.
• Special measures should be taken to counteract a higher thermal expansion coefficient to prevent warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

• Most manufacturers recommend a forging temperature range between 2100°F and 2300°F.
• Do not forge below 1700°F (927°C) for optimal
• corrosion resistance, completing the forgings with a final anneal.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

• 316/316L grades are extremely tough and ductile, facilitating cold work processes like roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing,
  and bending without significant issues.
• Severely cold-formed parts should be annealed to alleviate stresses.

MACHINABILITY:

• Type 316/316L is somewhat more challenging to machine than Type 304, due to its toughness.
• 316/316L generates tough, strong chips.
• Chip breakers and curlers are recommended.
• Utilize the largest feasible tool and ample cutting fluid.
• Heavy, positive feeds at low speeds are advisable since 316/316L work hardens quickly.
