CORROSION RESISTANCE Alloy 2205 features exceptional resistance to chloride-induced pitting and stress corrosion cracking.
ELEVATED TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE According to the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, the upper-temperature limit is set at 600°F (315°C). Prolonged exposure to temperatures above this limit can cause embrittlement.
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES Alloy 2205 offers more than double the strength of conventional austenitic stainless steels in the annealed condition. It can be supplied in the cold-worked condition, achieving yield strengths exceeding 160 ksi. It maintains excellent toughness at temperatures as low as -50°F (-10°C).
WORKABILITY Alloy 2205 is conducive to cold forming, although its high work-hardening rate may necessitate intermediate anneals. Post hot or cold forming, annealing is recommended to achieve optimal stress corrosion resistance.

Duplex 2205 stainless steel pipe is a high-performance duplex ferritic-austenitic stainless steel that includes 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. As the most commonly utilized duplex grade, it boasts a yield strength twice that of standard austenitic grades. Additionally, it offers remarkable fatigue strength and superior resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion in the harshest conditions.
Manufacturers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature range of 2010 to 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). If the workpiece is not uniformly heated, the cooler edges are at risk of cracking.
Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel Tube showcases excellent formability across various manufacturing processes. However, its significant high strength can pose challenges. Even with robust equipment, the increased springback due to the high strength of this grade must be considered.
Machining Duplex 2205 is slightly more challenging than machining 300 series austenitic stainless steels. It requires higher cutting forces, leading to quicker tool wear. Follow these guidelines for optimal machining: A) Use a powerful, rigid machine with strong tool and workpiece mounts; B) Keep tool extensions minimal to reduce vibration; C) Ensure the tool nose radius is not unnecessarily long, maintaining a sharp edge while providing adequate strength; D) Design the machining sequence so the depth of cut always remains below the work-hardened layer from the previous operation.
