Duplex 2205 is a premium-grade, dual-phase, ferritic-austenitic stainless steel alloy, meticulously crafted with 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. Renowned as the most widely utilized duplex stainless steel grade, it boasts a yield strength that remarkably doubles that of standard austenitic grades. Duplex 2205 excels with its superior fatigue strength and unparalleled resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion in the harshest of environments.

CORROSION RESISTANCE
- With its elevated chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, Duplex 2205 showcases outstanding corrosion resistance, surpassing that of 316 and 316L in most environments.
- The chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content also provides exceptional resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in aggressive and acidic solutions.
- Exhibits robust resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking at temperatures up to approximately 302°F (150°C).
- The ferrite presence ensures excellent performance of Duplex 2205 in caustic environments.
HEAT RESISTANCE
- Like other duplex stainless steels, Duplex 2205 features commendable oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.
- However, it is susceptible to embrittlement when exposed to temperatures above 572°F (300°C), even for short durations. Thus, it is not recommended for use above 572°F (300°C).
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- Duplex 2205 offers excellent weldability.
- It is generally advisable not to weld without filler metal to prevent excessive ferrite formation.
HEAT TREATMENT
- The recommended annealing temperature range is between 1868 to 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
- Duplex 2205 cannot be hardened by heat treatment but does work-harden effectively.
- Special precautions are necessary to account for its higher coefficient of thermal expansion to mitigate warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
- Most producers of Duplex 2205 suggest a maximum hot forming temperature of 2010 to 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). If the workpiece shape is not compact, the edges may cool significantly faster than the bulk, risking cracking in cooler regions.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING
- Duplex 2205 has demonstrated remarkable formability across a wide range of fabrication processes. However, the high strength of Duplex 2205 can introduce challenges, necessitating careful consideration. Even when the equipment is sufficiently powerful, extra allowance must be made for higher spring-back caused by the grade's exceptional strength.
MACHINABILITY
Duplex 2205 is somewhat more challenging to process compared to the 300 series austenitic stainless steels. It requires higher cutting forces, leading to faster tool wear. To optimize machining, consider the following guidelines: A) Utilize powerful, rigid machines with extremely strong, rigid mounting of tools and workpieces, B) Minimize vibration by keeping tool extensions as short as possible, C) Use a nose radius on the tool that is no larger than necessary, for carbides with a sharp edge while maintaining adequate strength, and D) Design machining sequences to always ensure a depth of cut below the work-hardened layer from previous passes.

What Are the Commonly Used Surfaces of Stainless Steel Coils?
The surface finish of 201 stainless steel coil can vary based on the cold rolling processing methods and subsequent surface treatments applied. These surface treatments include NO.1, 2B, 4, HL, 6, 8, BA, TR hard, heavy rolling bright 2H, polished bright, and others:
- NO.1: The NO.1 surface is achieved after hot rolling, heat treatment, and pickling of stainless steel strip. This process removes the black oxide scale formed during hot rolling and heat treatment. The NO.1 surface is silvery white and matte, and it is primarily used in industries where high surface gloss is not required but heat and corrosion resistance are paramount, such as the alcohol industry, chemical industry, and for large containers.
- 2B: The 2B surface, unlike the 2D surface, is smoothed by a light roller, resulting in a brighter finish. The surface roughness Ra value, typically ranging from 0.1 to 0.5μm, makes it adaptable for various processing types. This versatile surface finish is ideal for industries such as chemical, papermaking, petroleum, medical, and for building curtain walls.
- TR Hard Surface: TR stainless steel, also known as hard steel, includes grades like 304 and 301. It is used where high strength and hardness are required, such as in railway vehicles, conveyor belts, springs, and washers. The work hardening characteristics of austenitic stainless steel are leveraged by cold working methods to enhance strength and hardness. The TR hard surface is achieved by gently rolling the hard material by a few to tens of percent without subsequent annealing, resulting in a rolled surface post-cold rolling.
- Re-Rolled Bright 2H: After the rolling operation, the stainless steel strip undergoes a bright annealing process. Utilizing a continuous annealing line, the strip is rapidly cooled as it travels along the line at speeds of 60-80m/min. This meticulous process ensures the surface finish achieves a 2H re-rolled bright quality, offering a superior polished appearance.
- No. 4: The No. 4 surface boasts an exceptional polishing finish, significantly brighter than No. 3. This surface can be achieved by polishing a cold-rolled stainless steel plate with a 2D or 2B finish, followed by sanding with a 150-180# grit belt. The surface roughness (Ra) ranges between 0.2 and 1.5μm. The No. 4 surface is versatile, making it ideal for applications in restaurants, cooking equipment, medical instruments, architectural decoration, containers, and more.
- HL: The HL surface, commonly known as a hairline finish, is defined by the Japanese JIS standard as a continuous hairline abrasive surface achieved using a 150-240# grit belt. However, the Chinese GB3280 standard lacks clarity on the specifications. The HL finish is predominantly used in architectural decoration, including elevators, escalators, and exterior walls, providing a sophisticated aesthetic.
- No. 6: The No. 6 surface is an enhancement of the No. 4 surface, polished further with a Tampico brush or W63 grit material as specified in the GB2477 standard. This results in a surface with a refined metallic luster, softness, minimal reflection, and no imaging. Its excellent performance makes it ideal for use in curtain walls, tassel decorations, and cooking supplies.
- BA: BA is a surface that has undergone bright heat treatment post cold rolling. This involves annealing in a protective atmosphere to prevent oxidation and retain the gloss of the cold-rolled finish. It is then polished with a high-precision roller for enhanced surface brightness. The surface roughness is evaluated at 0.05-0.1μm, nearly achieving a mirror-like finish. BA surfaces are suitable for various applications, including food utensils, household appliances, medical equipment, automotive parts, and decorations.
- No. 8: The No. 8 surface, known for its mirror-like reflectivity with no abrasive particles, is often referred to as an 8K board in the stainless steel deep processing industry. Utilizing BA material, it requires minimal polishing to achieve a stunning mirror finish. This surface is often chosen for building entrances and luxurious interior decorations.
