Type 409 Stainless Steel (UNS S40900) is a stabilized ferritic stainless steel boasting higher oxidation and corrosion resistance compared to carbon steel. Grade 409
- Grade 409 is a titanium-stabilized ferritic stainless steel. This general-purpose chromium stainless steel is predominantly utilized for automotive exhaust systems. It is ideal for applications where mechanical qualities, corrosion resistance, and weldability are more critical than aesthetic appeal, especially under high-temperature conditions.
- ASTM requirements, such as ASTM A240M for flat rolled steel, now categorize S40910, S40920, and S40930 as "sub-grades" rather than using the generic Grade 409 designation.
- These grades are stabilized to varying degrees with titanium, niobium, or a combination of both. Each of these can be certified as S40900 (Grade 409). For tubing applications, ASTM A268M specifies only the standard Grade 409.
Corrosion Resistance:
- Grade 409 demonstrates resistance to both atmospheric and exhaust gas corrosion. Although a light surface rust may develop in most environments, it acts as a protective layer that prevents further corrosion-though it is not suitable for cosmetic purposes. Its corrosion resistance is comparable to 3CR12 and 12% chromium martensitic grades (410) but is lower than that of the 17% chromium grade 430.
Heat Resistance
- Grade 409 resists scaling in intermittent service up to 815°C and continuous service up to 675°C. However, these temperature limits can vary depending on specific service conditions.
Heat Treatment
- For annealing, heat Grade 409 to 790-900 degrees Celsius and then cool it using air. This grade cannot be hardened by heat treatment.
Welding
- Grade 409 is easily weldable, although it is recommended to pre-heat the material to 150-260°C. While Grade 409 or Grade 430 electrodes or filler rods can be used, welding with Grade 309 rods or electrodes is pre-qualified under AS 1554.6, resulting in a more ductile weld.
- Post-weld annealing at 760-815°C enhances weld ductility.
Post-weld annealing is not required for welding small sections. In automotive exhaust tubing, welding is typically performed without filler metal (autogenously).
To mitigate the effects of grain formation, maintain minimal heat during all welding operations.
Typical Applications
Common uses include automotive exhaust systems, such as catalytic converters and mufflers.

- ASTM A268M outlines the parameters for Grade 409 in annealed tubing. ASTM A240M specifies the composition for additional grades used in coil and sheet applications, with other items potentially having similar but not identical properties.
Forming:
- 409 stainless steel can be easily cut, blanked, stretch-formed, and drawn. Its formability characteristics are very similar to those of carbon steel.
