Grade 409 is a stabilized ferritic general-purpose stainless steel tube that boasts 11% chromium content. Ideal for applications where oxidation or corrosion resistance is paramount, Grade 409 surpasses the capabilities of carbon and certain coated steels. While it offers robust oxidation resistance and formability, its lower chromium concentration lends it a moderate corrosion resistance, falling short of grades like 304, 430, or 439, yet still superior to mild steel. Forming this tube can involve roll forming, stretch bending, deep drawing, and press forming. Post-annealing, Grade 409 does not harden during cold treatment with techniques such as press or stretch bending. It possesses commendable weldability, but it's not advisable for shock-loaded structures due to grain structure expansion in heat-affected zones, impacting overall mechanical integrity. Predominantly employed in automotive exhaust applications, its mechanical properties shine in both automotive and agricultural industries, standing up admirably to corrosion from exhaust gases and high-temperature environments. Notably, though, while its mechanical properties are robust, its aesthetic appeal is not ideal for decorative uses.
