CORROSION RESISTANCE:

• 316 stainless steel provides superior resistance compared to 304 in various atmospheric conditions and corrosive environments, thanks to its higher chromium and molybdenum content.

HEAT RESISTANCE:

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:

• Exhibits excellent weldability through all standard fusion methods, with or without filler metals.
• Heavy welded sections in Grade 316 require post-weld annealing for maximum corrosion resistance, a step not necessary for Grade 316L.

HEAT TREATMENT:

• The annealing temperature range is between 1900 to 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
• Cannot be hardened by heat treatment.
• Special measures are needed to offset a higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

• Most manufacturers recommend a maximum forging temperature between 2100°F and 2300°F.
• Do not forge below 1700°F (927°C) Best
• Optimal corrosion resistance is achieved if forgings undergo a final anneal.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

• 316/316L types, being extremely tough and ductile, are easily cold worked through roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing,
  bending, etc., without difficulty.
• Severely cold-formed parts should be annealed to remove stresses.

MACHINABILITY:

• Type 316/316L is more challenging to machine than Type 304 due to its toughness.
• 316/316L exhibits chip characteristics that are tough and strong.
• Using chip breakers and curlers is recommended.
• Employing the largest possible tool with ample cutting fluid is advised.
• Consider heavy positive feeds at low speeds since 316/316L work hardens quickly.
