Type 321 stainless steel is a premium austenitic steel, sharing many properties with Type 304 but with enhanced titanium and carbon content. This superior material offers exceptional corrosion and oxidation resistance, along with remarkable toughness, even in cryogenic conditions. Titanium in 321 stainless steel prevents harmful carbide precipitation in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of the weld, offers partial protection against intergranular corrosion, and reduces embrittlement in high-risk areas of the weld. Type 321H is ideal for applications where parts are heated to carbide precipitation temperatures (800°F-1500°F) and exposed to corrosive atmospheres. Comparable to 304 stainless steel but with more nickel and titanium stabilization, 321 stainless steel ensures maintained corrosion resistance by preventing chromium carbide formation at grain boundaries. This grade responds excellently to cold working, is easily weldable, and rarely requires post-weld annealing, making it perfect for a variety of corrosive environments.

GENERAL PROPERTIES
- 321 Stainless Steel Pipe (UNS S32100) is a titanium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel known for its exceptional overall corrosion resistance. This alloy demonstrates high resistance to intergranular corrosion after being exposed within the chromium carbide precipitation temperature range of 800 - 1500°F (427 - 816°C). It resists oxidation up to 1500°F (816°C) and offers superior creep and stress rupture properties compared to 304 and 304L stainless steel pipes. Additionally, it maintains good low-temperature toughness.
- 321H Stainless Steel Tube (UNS S 32109) features a higher carbon content (0.04 - 0.10), which is specifically designed to enhance creep resistance and strength at temperatures exceeding 1000°F (537°C). Typically, the carbon content allows for dual certification of the plate.
- Alloy 321 can only be toughened through cold working and not by heat treatment. It is easily welded and processed using conventional shop fabrication techniques.

CORROSION RESISTANCE
- Exhibits excellent general corrosion resistance, comparable to 304.
- Developed for use within the chromium carbide precipitation range of 1800 - 1500°F (427 - 816°C).
- Suitable for use in most diluted organic acids at moderate temperatures.
- Applicable in pure phosphoric acid at lower temperatures.
- Usable in up to 10% diluted solutions at elevated temperatures.
- Resists polythionic acid stress corrosion cracking in hydrocarbon service.
- Effective in chloride or fluoride-free caustic solutions at moderate temperatures.
- Not recommended for use in chloride solutions, even in small concentrations, or in sulfuric acid service.
PROCESSING
Alloy 321/H can be easily welded and processed using standard shop fabrication practices.
HOT FORMING
- Recommended working temperatures for forging, upsetting, and hot working processes are between 2100 - 2300°F (1149 - 1260°C).
- The alloy is not suitable for work at temperatures below 1700°F (927°C).
- Material must be water quenched or fully annealed post-working to regain maximum corrosion resistance.
COLD FORMING
- Highly ductile and easily formable.
WELDING
- Readily welded by most standard processes.
- Post-weld heat treatment is not necessary.
MACHINING
- The hardening rate of 321 makes it less machinable than 410 stainless steel, but it is similar to 304.
