904L grade stainless steel delivers remarkable resistance to hot seawater and chloride attacks. The addition of copper further enhances its resistance to sulfuric acid and other reducing agents, both in corrosive and mild environments. The corrosion resistance of 904L grade steel surpasses that of standard austenitic steels like 316L but falls between super-austenitic steels containing 6% molybdenum. Grade 904L stainless steel tubes boast exceptional resistance to warm seawater and chloride attacks. This remarkable resistance to stress corrosion cracking stems from its high nickel content. Additionally, the infusion of copper enhances its resilience against sulfuric acid and other reducing agents, making it robust under both aggressive and mild conditions.
The corrosion resistance of grade 904L stands between super austenitic grades with 6% molybdenum content and standard 316L austenitic grades. While grade 904L is not as resistant as grades 304L and 310L, which lack molybdenum, it still provides substantial durability. Solution treatment after cold working is essential to achieve maximum resistance against stress corrosion cracking in critical environments.
Grade 904L stainless steel exhibits commendable oxidation resistance. However, its structural stability diminishes at elevated temperatures, especially above 400°C.
Grade 904L stainless steel can undergo solution heat treatment at temperatures ranging from 1090 to 1175°C, followed by rapid cooling. This thermal treatment is effective for hardening the steel.
Welding grade 904L stainless steel can be accomplished using all conventional methods. This grade does not necessitate pre-heating or post-weld heat treatments. However, it is susceptible to hot cracking in constrained weldments. Grade 904L electrodes and rods, conforming to AS 1554.6, are recommended for welding.
Grade 904L stainless steel tubes are high-purity steels with low sulfur content, allowing machining through standard methods. These grades can be easily bent to a small radius under cold conditions. While annealing is generally not required, it should be performed under severe stress corrosion cracking conditions.
