CORROSION RESISTANCE:

• 316 Stainless Steel offers enhanced resistance compared to 304 in a wide array of atmospheric environments and various corrosive media, thanks to its increased chromium and molybdenum content.
• However, it remains vulnerable to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments and is prone to stress corrosion cracking at temperatures above 122°F (50°C).
• It is generally considered resistant to potable water containing up to approximately 1000mg/L of chlorides at ambient, reducing to about 500mg/L at 140°F (60°C).
• Often referred to as 'marine grade stainless steel,' it is important to note that 316 is not resistant to warm sea water.

HEAT RESISTANCE:

• 316 Stainless Steel exhibits robust oxidation resistance, withstanding intermittent service up to 1600°F (870°C) and continuous service up to 1700°F (925°C).
• Grade 316L, in particular, displays superior resistance to carbide precipitation.

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:

• Offering excellent weldability through all standard fusion methods, whether with or without filler metals.
• Note: Heavy welded sections in Grade 316 necessitate post-weld annealing for optimal corrosion resistance-a requirement not needed for Grade 316L.

HEAT TREATMENT:

• The ideal annealing temperature range spans from 1900 to 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
• Heat treatment does not harden this grade.
• Special measures must be taken to counterbalance the higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

• Most manufacturers advise maintaining a maximum forging temperature between 2100°F and 2300°F.
• Avoid forging below 1700°F (927°C) for best results.
• Optimal corrosion resistance is achieved if the forgings undergo a final anneal.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

• Types 316/316L, known for their extreme toughness and ductility, can be easily cold worked via methods such as roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing, and bending without issue.
• Severely cold-formed parts should undergo annealing to relieve stresses.

MACHINEABILITY:

• 316/316L types present more machining difficulty compared to Type 304 due to their enhanced toughness.
• They exhibit tough and strong chip characteristics.
• Utilize chip breakers and curlers for better results.
• Employing as large a tool as possible, alongside significant amounts of cutting fluid, is recommended.
• Consider heavy positive feeds at low speeds since 316/316L grades harden rapidly during work.
