CORROSION RESISTANCE:

316L Stainless Steel Rod

  • 316L stainless steel rod offers superior resistance compared to 304, particularly in various atmospheric environments and corrosive media. This enhanced performance is due to the heightened levels of chromium.
    and molybdenum content.
  • The rod is susceptible to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments and may undergo stress corrosion cracking when exposed to temperatures above 122°F (50°C).
  • It is deemed resistant to potable water containing up to about 1000mg/L of chlorides at ambient temperatures, with this threshold reducing to about 500mg/L at
    140°F (60°C).
  • Often referred to as 'marine grade stainless steel,' it is not immune to corrosion from warm seawater.

HEAT RESISTANCE:

  • Exhibits commendable oxidation resistance during intermittent service up to 1600°F (870°C) and continuous service up to 1700°F (925°C).
  • Grade 316L is particularly more resilient against carbide precipitation.

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Provides exceptional weldability through all standard fusion methods, both with and without filler metals.
  • Post-weld annealing is essential for heavy welded sections in Grade 316 to achieve peak corrosion resistance, though this is unnecessary for Grade 316L.

HEAT TREATMENT:

  • The recommended annealing temperature range for this stainless steel rod is between 1900°F and 2100°F (1038°C to 1149°C).
  • This material cannot be hardened by heat treatment methods.
  • Due to its high coefficient of thermal expansion, special care must be taken to counteract potential warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

  • Most manufacturers recommend maintaining a maximum forging temperature between 2100°F and 2300°F.
  • Avoid forging below 1700°F (927°C) for optimal results.
  • Optimal corrosion resistance is achieved if the forgings receive a final anneal.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

  • The 316/316L stainless steel rod, known for its toughness and ductility, is ideal for various cold forming operations such as roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing,
    bending, and more, without complication.
  • Parts that undergo severe cold forming should be annealed to relieve stresses.

MACHINEABILITY:

  • Compared to Type 304, Type 316/316L stainless steel rod is somewhat more challenging to machine due to its robustness.
  • The material exhibits chip characteristics that are notably tough and strong.
  • Employing chip breakers and curlers is highly recommended.
  • Utilize the largest possible tooling and substantial amounts of cutting fluid for best results.
  • Heavy positive feeds at low speeds are advisable since 316/316L work-hardens quickly.
