431 Stainless Steel Bar Material boasts exceptional corrosion resistance across a diverse array of corrosive environments. While it offers moderate resistance to salt water in cooler southern regions, performance may diminish in warmer tropical waters. Comparatively, the corrosion resistance of 431 Round Bar Material is similar to, or slightly less than, that of 304 Grade Material. Optimal performance is achieved when the surface is smooth, in its hardened and tempered state.
This material resists scaling in intermittent service up to 925°C and in continuous service up to 870°C. However, usage is generally not recommended at temperatures exceeding the relevant tempering temperature due to the potential reduction in mechanical properties.
Full annealing is impractical for this grade as it hardens even when cooled slowly. For Process Annealing, heat to 620-660°C and allow to air cool.
Hardening is achieved by heating to 980-1065°C, maintaining this temperature for approximately 30 minutes, then quenching in air or oil. Pre-heating at 760-790°C may be beneficial for intricate parts or those already hardened. Temper according to mechanical requirements at temperatures listed in the accompanying table.
Avoid the tempering range of 425-600°C due to a decrease in impact toughness, although this effect is less pronounced compared to other martensitic grades.
Welding presents challenges due to the risk of cracking. A pre-heat of 200-300°C is advised before welding. While Grade 410 filler rod can be used, Grades 308L, 309, or 310 will yield more ductile welds, provided matching properties are not a necessity. Post-weld heat treatment at 650°C is recommended.
When annealed, this grade is relatively easy to machine. However, once hardened beyond 30HRC, machining becomes more challenging. The Ugima Improved Machinability version of Grade 431 significantly enhances achievable machining speeds and tool lifespan.
Ideal for: Nuts and bolts, propeller shafting, pump shafts, beater bars, and marine hardware.
The properties specified pertain to bar products under ASTM A276. Similar, though not necessarily identical, properties are detailed for other products such as plates and forgings in their respective specifications.
