CORROSION RESISTANCE:
316L Stainless Steel Rod
- 316L stainless steel offers superior resistance compared to 304 in various atmospheric environments and a multitude of corrosive media due to its elevated chromium
and molybdenum content. - However, it can experience pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments and is prone to stress corrosion cracking above 122°F (50°C).
- This alloy is considered resistant to potable water containing up to 1000mg/L chlorides at ambient temperatures, with the limit reducing to approximately 500mg/L at
140°F (60°C). - Often regarded as the 'marine grade stainless steel', 316L is not resistant to warm seawater.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- 316L demonstrates commendable oxidation resistance during intermittent service up to 1600°F (870°C) and continuous service up to 1700°F (925°C).
- Grade 316L also shows enhanced resistance to carbide precipitation.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:
- Exhibiting excellent weldability through all standard fusion methods, both with and without filler metals.
- For Grade 316, post-weld annealing is necessary for maximum corrosion resistance, but this step is not required for Grade 316L.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- The recommended annealing temperature range is 1900 to 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
- 316L cannot be hardened via heat treatment.
- Special care must be taken to compensate for its higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:
- Producers generally recommend a maximum forging temperature ranging between 2100°F and 2300°F.
- Do not forge below 1700°F (927°C).
- Optimal corrosion resistance is achieved if the forgings undergo a final anneal.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:
- 316/316L stainless steel rods, known for being exceptionally tough and ductile, can be easily cold worked through processes like roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing,
bending, and more, without difficulty. - Severely cold-formed parts should be annealed to alleviate stresses.
MACHINABILITY:
- Type 316/316L stainless steel is somewhat more challenging to machine than Type 304 due to its toughness.
- 316/316L machines with tough and strong chip characteristics.
- Using chip breakers and curlers is advised.
- Employ as large a tool as possible and abundant cutting fluid.
- Consider heavy positive feeds at low speeds since 316/316L work hardens rapidly.
