CORROSION RESISTANCE Alloy 2205 offers remarkable resistance to chloride-induced pitting and stress corrosion cracking.
ELEVATED TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code sets an upper-temperature limit of 600°F (315°C) for Alloy 2205. Prolonged exposure above this temperature can lead to embrittlement.
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES Alloy 2205 boasts more than double the strength of conventional austenitic stainless steels when annealed. It can also be supplied in a cold-worked state with yield strengths exceeding 160 ksi, maintaining good toughness at temperatures as low as -50°F (-10°C).
WORKABILITY Alloy 2205 can be effectively cold-formed. Due to its high work-hardening rate, intermediate anneals may be necessary. Post-forming annealing is recommended to achieve optimal stress corrosion resistance.

Duplex 2205 stainless steel pipe is a high-performance duplex ferritic-austenitic alloy, enriched with 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. As the most prevalent grade of duplex stainless steel, it boasts double the yield strength of conventional austenitic grades. This exceptional material also offers outstanding fatigue strength and superior resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion, even under the harshest conditions.
Manufacturers advise a maximum hot-forming temperature range of 2010 to 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). Uneven cooling might result in cooler edges, increasing the risk of cracking.
The Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel Tube showcases exceptional formability across various manufacturing processes. However, its superior strength can pose challenges. Even if the machinery is robust, the increased springback due to the high tensile strength of Duplex 2205 must be considered during production planning.
Machining Duplex 2205 is slightly more demanding compared to 300 series austenitic stainless steels. The increased cutting forces result in quicker tool wear. To optimize machining, adhere to the following guidelines: A) Use a powerful, rigid machine with strong tool and workpiece mounts; B) Keep tool extensions minimal to reduce vibration; C) Ensure the tool nose radius is only as long as necessary, maintaining a sharp edge while offering adequate strength; D) Design the machining sequence to ensure the depth of cut is consistently below the work-hardened layer from the previous operation.
