316/316L stainless steel alloy is an austenitic stainless steel pipe enriched with molybdenum. The elevated nickel and molybdenum content enhances its corrosion resistance beyond that of 304, particularly against pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments. CORROSION RESISTANCE:

• Boasting superior resistance compared to 304 stainless steel, our 316 stainless steel thrives in a variety of atmospheric conditions and corrosive environments, thanks to its elevated chromium and molybdenum content.

HEAT RESISTANCE:

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:

• Offers outstanding weldability across all standard fusion methods, with or without filler metals.
• Heavy welded sections in Grade 316 benefit from post-weld annealing to maximize corrosion resistance, unlike grade 316L.

HEAT TREATMENT:

• The ideal annealing temperature ranges from 1900 to 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
• Cannot be hardened through heat treatment.
• Extra care is required to counteract the higher coefficient of thermal expansion, preventing warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

• Most manufacturers recommend a forging temperature limit between 2100°F and 2300°F.
• Do not forge below 1700°F (927°C). Optimal
• corrosion resistance is achieved when the forgings receive a final anneal.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

• Thanks to their exceptional toughness and ductility, 316/316L types can be easily cold worked through methods such as roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing,
  bending, etc., without any issues.
• Severely cold-formed parts should be annealed to relieve stresses.

MACHINEABILITY:

• Due to its toughness, Type 316/316L is slightly harder to machine compared to Type 304.
• It produces chips that are notably tough and strong.
• Utilize chip breakers and curlers for optimal results.
• Opt for the largest tool possible and use ample cutting fluid.
• Heavy positive feeds at low speeds are recommended as 316/316L work hardens swiftly.
