Duplex 2205 Round Bar stands as a paragon of duplex ferritic-austenitic stainless steel, boasting a composition of 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. Recognized as the most widely-used duplex stainless steel grade, it features a yield strength double that of conventional austenitic variants. Its superior fatigue strength is coupled with remarkable resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, and pitting. Additionally, it excels in erosion and general corrosion resistance, even in the harshest conditions.
Leading producers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). Non-compact workpieces may have significantly cooler edges, risking cracking in these regions.
Duplex 2205 offers excellent formability across various fabrication processes. However, its high strength can present challenges. Even with powerful equipment, higher spring-back allowances must be considered due to the grade's substantial strength.
The duplex stainless steel bar 2205 is slightly more challenging to machine compared to 300 series austenitic stainless steels. It requires higher cutting forces, leading to quicker tool wear. For optimal machining results, follow these guidelines: A) Utilize a powerful, rigid machine with strong tool and workpiece mounts; B) Keep tool extensions short to reduce vibration; C) Ensure the tool nose radius is not longer than necessary, providing a sharp carbide edge with adequate strength; D) Plan the machining sequence so that the depth of cut always stays below the work-hardened layer from previous operations.
