431 Stainless Steel Bar Material boasts superior corrosion resistance across a multitude of corrosive environments. While it demonstrates some saltwater resistance in cold southern seas, its performance may be limited in warmer tropical waters. When compared to 304 Grade Material, the corrosion resistance of 431 Round Bar Material is comparable or slightly inferior. Optimal performance is achieved with a smooth surface in a hardened and tempered state.
This material resists scaling during intermittent service up to 925°C and continuous service up to 870°C. However, usage above the specified tempering temperature is generally discouraged due to a reduction in mechanical properties.
Full anneal is impractical for this grade as it hardens even with slow cooling. For Process Anneal, heat to 620-660°C followed by air cooling is recommended.
Hardening is achieved by heating the material to 980-1065°C, holding for approximately 30 minutes, then quenching in air or oil. Pre-heating at 760-790°C is beneficial for complex parts or pre-hardened components. Tempering should be done according to mechanical requirements, as detailed in the accompanying table.
Avoid the tempering range of 425-600°C due to diminished impact toughness, although the effect is less significant than in most other martensitic grades.
Welding this material is challenging due to the risk of cracking. A pre-heat of 200-300°C is recommended before welding. While Grade 410 filler rod can be used, Grades 308L, 309, or 310 offer more ductile welds if matching properties are not essential. Post-weld heat treatment at 650°C is advisable.
In its annealed state, this grade is relatively easy to machine. However, machining becomes more difficult if the material is hardened beyond 30HRC. Ugima Improved Machinability Grade 431 significantly enhances achievable machining speeds and tool life.

The specified properties for bar products are outlined in ASTM A276. Similar but not necessarily identical properties are specified for other products such as plates and forgings in their respective specifications.
