- Ferritic, pure chromium, non-hardenable grade 430 offers excellent formability and corrosion resistance along with practical mechanical properties. Its ability to withstand *** corrosion makes it valuable in certain chemical applications, while its main uses are in appliance parts and automotive trim.
- For use in automatic screw machines, grade 430F is a more machinable variation of this grade that is available in bar form. Grade 434, which contains molybdenum, shares the same beneficial characteristics as Grade 430 with enhanced corrosion resistance.
- According to ASTM A240/A240M, the 430 steel grade is meticulously defined for flat rolled goods, including plates, sheets, and coils. Various other specifications, such as those for bars and forgings, often list similar, though not identical, qualities. For bars specifically, ASTM A582 provides the detailed characteristics of Grade 430F.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 offers robust resistance to a multitude of corrosive environments, including *** and certain organic acids. When polished or ground to a high finish, it reaches peak corrosion resistance, comparable to grade 304. Additionally, it boasts exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking, a hallmark of all ferritic grades.
- Conversely, the non-free machining grade 430F, like other high sulfur free machining grades, demonstrates a markedly lower resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 can withstand oxidation at temperatures up to 870°C in intermittent service and 815°C during continuous service. Extended exposure to the 400-600°C range may cause brittleness at room temperature, which can be remedied by annealing.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- Solution Annealing: Heat to 815-845°C, maintain for ½ hour per 25mm of thickness, then slow furnace cool to 600°C before rapidly air cooling. Slow cooling from 540-400°C can induce embrittlement.
- Sub-Critical Anneal: Heat to 760-815°C, followed by air cooling or water quenching.
- Note: This grade does not respond to hardening by thermal treatment.
WELDING:
- When welding is required, pre-heating to 150-200°C is recommended.
- Post-weld annealing at 790-815°C can alleviate embrittlement in the weld metal and the heat-affected zone.
- No grain refinement will occur.
MACHINING:
- Machining grade 430 is more straightforward than standard austenitic grades like 304.
- Nevertheless, there remains a tendency for galling and pick-up on the cutting tool.
- Lightly drawn bars are easier to machine compared to those in the annealed condition.
- The 430F grade, a free-machining variant of 430, offers significantly improved machinability.
FABRICATION:
- Grade 430's lower work hardening rate makes bending and forming processes somewhat simpler than those for grade 304.
- However, its lower ductility limits the feasibility of very severe operations.
- For severe bends, ensure the bend axis is at right angles to the rolling direction.
- Severe cold heading of 430 wire is achievable.
