Duplex 2507 stainless steel is a high-performance super duplex alloy renowned for its remarkable low carbon content (up to 0.03%), significant chromium (~25%), nickel (~7%), and molybdenum (~4%) levels. This steel is engineered to meet the rigorous demands of applications necessitating superior strength and exceptional corrosion resistance. It is ideally suited for chemical process equipment, the petrochemical industry, and seawater applications. Remarkable for its resistance to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking, its elevated chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content ensures outstanding resistance to pitting, crevice, and general corrosion.

How Is Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel Made?

  • Duplex 2507 stainless steel production follows the same sophisticated procedures as other advanced high-alloy steels. Initially, scrap steel is melted in an electric arc furnace; desired alloys are then meticulously added. The molten steel is transferred to an AOD (argon oxygen decarburization) converter, where critical processes occur, such as decarburization, sulfur refinement, and the removal of dissolved gases.
  • During the AOD process, nitrogen is strategically incorporated into the steel. Subsequently, the steel advances to the ladle furnace for fine-tuning of inclusions.
  • Once preliminary procedures are complete, the molten steel undergoes casting to form either large solitary ingots or continuously produced blooms. These solid steel forms are reheated, then forged or rolled to the specified thickness. A heat treatment process called solution annealing, followed by rapid water quenching, ensures a uniform internal structure.
  • Fabrication of Duplex 2507 pipe materials can be accomplished via hot or cold forming techniques. For hot forming, the temperature should range between 1024 °C and 1232 °C. Post hot forming, solution annealing at 1052-1125 °C, followed by a swift water quench, is necessary. Cold forming methods, such as bending, deep drawing, extruding, and pressing, must be accompanied by subsequent heat treatment, incorporating solution annealing and quenching.
