SPECIFICATIONS
AMS 4928 - Bars, Forgings, and Forging Stock (Annealed)
AMS 4965 - Bars, Forgings (Solution treated and aged)
AMS 4967 - Bars, Forgings (Annealed, Heat Treatable)
HEAT TREATMENT
- When superior hardness, tensile strength, and fatigue strength are required, annealing is performed at 1,700-1,900°F (927-1,038°C).
The DAXUN 6-4™ Grade 5 alloy offers versatile heat treatment options. - 1. Anneal: 1,275-1,400°F (691-760°C) for ½ to 2 hours, followed by air or furnace cooling.
- 2. Stress Relief Anneal: 1,000-1,200°F (538-649°C) for 1 to 8 hours, followed by air or furnace cooling.
- 3. Solution Heat Treat: 1,675-1,750°F (913-954°C) for 1 hour, followed by water quenching.
- 4. Aging: 975-1,025°F (524-552°C) for 4 to 8 hours, followed by air cooling.
In the solution-treated and aged condition, rapid quenching of smaller sections yields optimal properties. Larger sections and delayed quenching may result in suboptimal properties.
HARDNESS
The typical hardness in the annealed condition is Rockwell C 30-34, while the solution-treated and aged condition reaches Rockwell C 35-39.
Forgeability/Formability
- The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar is forged at 1,750°F (954°C) with a final forging temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). A minimum reduction of 35% is recommended to achieve optimal properties.
- The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar presents challenges when forming at room temperature, even in its annealed state. However, intense forming operations such as bending or stretching can be effectively executed on annealed material at elevated temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C) without compromising mechanical properties. Additionally, hot sizing or forming can be achieved through creep forming within the 1,000 - 1,200°F (538 - 649°C) range.
Machinability
The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar can be expertly machined using austenitic stainless steel machining techniques. This involves slow machining speeds, high feed rates, rigid tools, and the liberal use of non-chlorinated cutting fluids to ensure precision and performance.
Weldability
In the annealed or solution and partially aged conditions, Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy rod is highly weldable. Ageing is achieved during post-weld heat treatment. Care must be taken to prevent contamination by oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Fusion welding is best performed in an inert gas-filled chamber or with inert gas shielding the molten metal and adjacent heated zones, using a tail shield. Spot, seam, and flash welding can be done without a protective atmosphere.
Special Considerations
The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 titanium alloy rod is susceptible to contamination from hydrogen during improper pickling, and from oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during processes like forging, heat treating, and brazing. Such contamination can lead to a reduction in ductility, negatively impacting notch sensitivity and forming characteristics.

Grade 2 Titanium Rod. Known for its remarkable strength and versatility, ideal for numerous applications.
Corrosion Resistance. Our titanium rods offer exceptional resistance to corrosion, extending the lifespan of your products.
Titanium should not be used with strong reducing acids, fluoride solutions, pure oxygen, or anhydrous ***.
General Corrosion. Grade 2 titanium exhibits excellent corrosion resistance across various environments, as detailed in Table 1.
The general corrosion rates for Grade 2 titanium in a variety of media are shown in Table 1. CP titanium exhibits good corrosion resistance to a wide variety of environments including:
- Seawater and Brines. Our titanium rods perform exceptionally well in harsh marine environments.
- Inorganic Salts. They provide strong resistance against corrosion in the presence of inorganic salts.
- Moist *** Gas. These rods maintain their integrity even in moist *** gas conditions.
- Alkaline Solutions. Our titanium rods resist corrosion effectively in alkaline solutions.
- Oxidizing Acids. They offer excellent resistance to oxidizing acids.
- Organics and Organic Acids. Our titanium rods are highly resistant to organic substances and acids.
- Sulfur Compounds. They provide robust resistance against sulfur compounds.
Crevice Corrosion. Our CP titanium exhibits superior resistance to crevice corrosion in salt solutions compared to stainless steels.
CP titanium exhibits good resistance to crevice corrosion in salt solutions compared to stainless steels. CP titanium will not exhibit crevice corrosion at temperatures under 80 °C (176°F) regardless of pH, even under super chlorinated conditions.
Stress Corrosion Cracking. Grade 2 titanium shows outstanding resistance to stress corrosion cracking in hot chloride solutions and is immune to SCC in seawater.
Grade 2 titanium shows excellent resistance to stress corrosion (SCC) cracking in hot chloride solutions and is immune to sec in seawater.
Erosion Corrosion. Our titanium rods offer exceptional resistance to erosion in flowing environments.
Titanium shows excellent resistance to erosion in flowing environments, ensuring long-lasting performance.
Even when exposed to seawater velocities of up to 130 ft/sec (40 m/sec), the material shows negligible effects. The presence of abrasive particles like sand has minimal impact on corrosion, ensuring durability and longevity.
Hydrogen Embrittlement
Titanium does not significantly absorb hydrogen when exposed to seawater, even at elevated temperatures. Hydrogen absorption typically occurs only under specific conditions such as:
- pH levels below 3 or above 12
- Temperatures exceeding 176°F (80°C)
- A mechanism facilitating hydrogen generation, such as a galvanic couple or impressed current.
Bio-Corrosion
Titanium alloys showcase exceptional resistance to all types of microbiologically influenced corrosion. Despite their non-toxic nature towards marine organisms, biofouling can occur in seawater. This issue can be mitigated through chlorination or by increasing water velocity in heat exchangers.
Corrosion Fatigue
Unlike many materials, titanium does not exhibit reduced fatigue performance in seawater. Fatigue endurance limits and *** growth rates remain consistent whether tested in air or seawater.
Galvanic Corrosion
In the galvanic series, titanium is positioned near noble materials like stainless steels, typically acting as the cathode when paired with other metals. Consequently, titanium remains unaffected by galvanic corrosion but may accelerate the corrosion of the other metal. When coupled with more noble metals like graphite, titanium's passivity is further enhanced.
Fatigue Properties
Grade 2 Titanium Rod maintains its fatigue properties in seawater, showing no degradation. Fatigue endurance limits and *** growth rates are identical whether tested in air or seawater.
Weldability
CP2 Grade Titanium Rod is highly weldable, provided specific precautions are taken. Due to titanium's reactivity, an inert gas shield must be applied to both the outer and inner diameters of the rod. The material must also be clean of any grease or oil contamination.
Grade 2 Titanium Rod is typically welded using manual or automatic TIG welding, with or without filler wire. Low heat input is recommended to minimize the heat-affected zone. Post-weld heat treatment is generally not required.
