GENERAL PROPERTIES
Duplex 2205 is a high-performance, two-phase ferritic and austenitic stainless steel enriched with 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. As the premier choice for duplex stainless steel, it boasts double the yield strength of standard austenitic grades. Renowned for its superb fatigue strength, Duplex 2205 excels in resisting stress corrosion cracking, crevice, and pitting. CORROSION RESISTANCE
- Thanks to its elevated levels of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen, Duplex 2205 provides superior corrosion resistance compared to 316 and 316L in a wide range of environments.
- The alloy's rich content of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen ensures high resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in oxidizing and acidic conditions.
- Duplex 2205 stands up to chloride stress corrosion cracking and temperatures reaching approximately 302°F (150°C).
- The ferritic phase contributes to excellent performance in caustic environments.
HEAT RESISTANCE
- Like other duplex stainless steels, Duplex 2205 offers robust oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.
- However, exposure to temperatures beyond 572°F (300°C) can lead to embrittlement, even if brief. Thus, it is not recommended for use above this temperature.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- Duplex 2205 features good weldability.
- Generally, welding without filler metal is not advised as it may result in excessive ferrite.
HEAT TREATMENT
- The annealing temperature range is between 1868 and 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
- This alloy cannot be hardened by heat treatment but does work-harden.
- Considerations are needed to compensate for its higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
- Producers commonly recommend a maximum hot forming temperature from 2010 to 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). If the workpiece shape is not compact, cooler edges may risk cracking.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING
- Duplex 2205 has shown exceptional formability across various fabrications. Despite its impressive strength, this very attribute can present challenges. Even when utilizing equipment of substantial power, it is imperative to account for higher spring-back due to the grade's robust strength.
MACHINABILITY
Processing Duplex 2205 is marginally tougher than handling 300 series austenitic stainless steels. Increased cutting forces are necessary, leading to accelerated tool wear. Recommended machining guidelines include: A) Employing powerful, rigid machines with robust and firm mounting of both tools and workpieces, B) Minimizing vibration by using the shortest possible tool extension, C) Applying a nose radius on the tool that is no larger than necessary for carbides with a sharp edge while maintaining adequate strength, and D) Designing machining sequences to ensure a depth of cut that penetrates below the work-hardened layer from previous passes.
Features of 2205 stainless steel coils
- Type 2205 is a duplex (austenitic/ferritic) stainless steel enriched with chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen, significantly enhancing its performance and resistance to corrosion compared to 304 and 316 stainless steel. The alloy's austenite/ferrite microstructure and alloying elements provide exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and ***-induced crevice corrosion. Alloy 2205 demonstrates acceptable oxidation resistance up to 980°C but should only be used for specific applications, as prolonged exposure to temperatures between 300°C and 1000°C may induce brittleness. Type 2205 stainless steel is available in strip, coil, and sheet forms, suitable for a diverse range of applications.
What are the commonly used surfaces of stainless steel coils?
The surface finish of 201 stainless steel coils can vary based on cold rolling methods and subsequent surface treatments. Common surface treatments for stainless steel coils include NO.1, 2B, 4, HL, 6, 8, BA, TR hard, heavy rolling bright 2H, polished bright, and more:
- NO.1: This surface finish is achieved after hot rolling, heat treatment, and pickling of stainless steel strip. The black oxide scale formed during these processes is removed by pickling or similar methods. The No. 1 surface is silvery white and matte, primarily utilized in industries where high surface gloss is unnecessary but resistance to heat and corrosion is crucial, such as the alcohol and chemical industries, and for large containers.
- 2B: Distinct from the 2D surface, the 2B surface is brightened by a light roller, resulting in a shinier finish. The surface roughness Ra value, measured by equipment, ranges from 0.1 to 0.5μm, making it a typical choice for most processing types. This adaptable stainless steel strip surface is ideal for industries including chemical, papermaking, petroleum, medical, and diverse applications like building curtain walls.
- TR hard surface: TR stainless steel, also referred to as hard steel, includes grades like 304 and 301. It is utilized for products requiring increased strength and hardness, such as railway vehicles, conveyor belts, springs, and washers. The work-hardening properties of austenitic stainless steel are harnessed to enhance the strength and hardness of steel plates via cold working methods such as rolling. To replace the smooth flatness of the 2B base surface, the hard material undergoes gentle rolling by a few percent to tens of percent without subsequent annealing. Consequently, the TR hard surface features the rolled finish achieved through cold rolling.
- Re-rolled bright 2H: Following the rolling operation, the stainless steel strip undergoes a bright annealing process. Utilizing a continuous annealing line ensures swift cooling of the strip, which travels at a speed of 60-80m/min along the line. This meticulous process results in a 2H re-rolled bright surface finish, offering superior quality and sheen.
- No. 4: The No. 4 surface boasts an excellent polishing effect, surpassing the brightness of No. 3. It is achieved by polishing a cold-rolled stainless steel plate with a 2D or 2B surface, followed by sanding with a 150-180# grit belt. The surface roughness (Ra) is meticulously measured between 0.2 and 1.5μm. Widely acclaimed, the No. 4 surface is extensively employed in restaurants, cooking equipment, medical devices, architectural decorations, containers, and much more.
- HL: The HL surface, commonly known as a hairline finish, adheres to the Japanese JIS standard, characterized by a continuous hairline abrasive finish achieved with a 150-240# grit belt. The Chinese GB3280 standard offers less clarity regarding the restrictions. This elegant HL surface is prominently utilized in architectural decorations, including elevators, escalators, and exterior walls, adding a touch of sophistication.
- No. 6: The No. 6 surface is an enhanced version of No. 4, polished using a Tampico brush or W63 grit abrasive material as per the GB2477 standard. This surface exudes a refined metallic luster, softness, subtle reflectivity, and lacks imaging. Its remarkable qualities make it ideal for curtain walls, tassel decorations, and culinary supplies.
- BA: BA, or Bright Annealed surface, is achieved by bright heat treatment following cold rolling. The process involves annealing in a protective atmosphere to prevent oxidation and maintain the cold-rolled surface's gloss, followed by polishing with a high-precision smooth roller for enhanced brightness. The surface roughness, measured at 0.05-0.1μm, is nearly mirror-like.
