431 Stainless Steel Bar Material boasts exceptional corrosion resistance across a diverse array of corrosive environments. While it shows moderate resistance to saltwater in cooler southern waters, it may not be as effective in warmer tropical conditions. Overall, the corrosion resistance of 431 Round Bar Material is comparable to, or slightly less than, that of 304 Grade Material. Its optimal performance is achieved when it features a smooth surface in the hardened and tempered state.
This material resists scaling effectively in intermittent service up to 925°C and in continuous service up to 870°C. However, it is generally not advised for use at temperatures exceeding the relevant tempering point due to potential reductions in mechanical properties.
Full annealing is impractical for this grade as it tends to harden even with slow cooling. For process annealing, heat to 620-660°C and allow to air cool.
Harden by heating to 980-1065°C, maintain for approximately 30 minutes, then quench in air or oil. Pre-heating at 760-790°C can be beneficial for intricate parts or those already hardened. Adjust tempering to meet mechanical requirements, following the temperature guidelines in the accompanying table.
Avoid the tempering range of 425-600°C due to diminished impact toughness, albeit to a lesser extent than in most other martensitic grades.
Welding this material is challenging because of the high risk of cracking. Pre-heating to 200-300°C is advisable before welding. While Grade 410 filler rod can be used, Grades 308L, 309, or 310 are preferable for more ductile welds, provided matching properties are not essential. Conduct post-weld heat treatment at 650°C.
In its annealed state, this grade is relatively easy to machine. However, once hardened to above 30HRC, machining becomes more challenging. Daxun Alloys offers a Ugima Improved Machinability version of Grade 431, significantly enhancing machining speeds and extending tool life.
Ideal for a variety of uses including nuts and bolts, propeller shafting, pump shafts, beater bars, and marine hardware.
The specified properties are for bar products according to ASTM A276. Similar, though not necessarily identical, properties are specified for other products like plates and forgings in their respective specifications.
