CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- This material withstands corrosive attacks far better than standard hardenable stainless steels, offering robust protection.
- Its corrosion resistance is comparable to that of Alloy 304 across most media.
- It remains resistant in various chemical, petroleum, dairy, and food processing industries.
- However, it may be susceptible to crevice or pitting attacks if exposed to stagnant sea water for extended periods.
WELDABILITY:
- It can be successfully welded using most common fusion and resistance methods.
- However, it should not be joined using oxyacetylene welding techniques.
- Generally, no pre-heating is required before welding.
- Ensure the inter-pass temperature is limited to 248°F for optimal results.
- Achieving better toughness in the weld is possible after a complete heat treatment.
ELEVATED TEMPERATURE USE:
- It exhibits excellent resistance to oxidation up to approximately 1100°F.
- Prolonged exposure to elevated temperatures can lead to reduced toughness in the precipitation-hardened conditions.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:
- To forge, heat uniformly to 2150-2200°F and hold for half an hour per inch of thickness.
- The preferred temperature range for hot forming is 650-900°F while the steel remains austenitic.
- For optimal hardening, the forgings must be re-heat treated at 1875-1925°F.
- Cool the forgings to below 90°F to ensure thorough grain refinement.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:
- Alloy 17-4 is suitable for mild operations, as the material is hard in its annealed (solution-treated) condition.
- For severe cold working, heat treat the material to condition H1150 to prevent potential cracking.
- A bend radius exceeding 7T is often required for forming.
- To improve stress corrosion resistance after cold forming, re-aging at the precipitation-hardening temperature is recommended.
MACHINABILITY:
- This material can be machined in both solution-treated and precipitation-hardening conditions.
Mechanical Properties
- Type 17-4PH stainless steel boasts excellent mechanical properties, making it ideal for applications requiring high strength, hardness, and corrosion resistance. It is a cost-effective alternative to many high nickel non-ferrous alloys.
