CORROSION RESISTANCE:

  • This material exhibits superior resistance to corrosive environments, outperforming any standard hardenable stainless steel.
  • Its corrosion resistance is comparable to that of Alloy 304 in most media.
  • Ideal for use in chemical, petroleum, dairy, and food processing industries.
  • However, it may be susceptible to crevice or pitting attack if exposed to stagnant seawater for prolonged periods.

WELDABILITY:

  • Can be effectively welded using most common fusion and resistance techniques.
  • Not recommended for oxyacetylene welding.
  • Typically, pre-heating is unnecessary.
  • Ensure inter-pass temperatures do not exceed 248°F.
  • Post-welding heat treatment significantly enhances toughness.

ELEVATED TEMPERATURE USE:

  • Exhibits excellent oxidation resistance up to approximately 1100°F.
  • Prolonged exposure to high temperatures may decrease toughness in precipitation-hardened conditions.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

  • For forging, heat uniformly to 2150-2200°F and maintain for half an hour per inch of thickness.
  • The optimal temperature range for hot forming is 650-900°F when the steel is austenitic.
  • To optimize hardening operations, re-heat treat forgings at 1875-1925°F.
  • Cool forgings below 90°F to ensure refined grain structure.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

  • Alloy 17-4 is best suited for mild operations as it is hard in the annealed condition.
  • For severe cold working, heat treat to condition H1150 to prevent cracking.
  • A bend radius greater than 7T is often necessary.
  • Post cold forming, re-aging at the precipitation-hardening temperature is recommended to improve stress corrosion resistance.

MACHINABILITY:

  • This alloy can be machined in both solution-treated and precipitation-hardened states.
