Grade 904L:

• Austenitic stainless steel sheet of grade 904L is a non-stabilized, high-alloy, low-carbon steel. This grade offers exceptional resistance to strong reducing acids, especially sulfuric acid, thanks to the inclusion of copper. It also provides robust defense against chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking and pitting/crevice corrosion.
• This grade boasts outstanding formability and weldability, remaining non-magnetic under all conditions. Its austenitic structure imparts exceptional toughness, even at cryogenic temperatures.
• Nickel and molybdenum, two premium elements, are abundantly present in 904L stainless steel. However, the rise of Duplex stainless steel 2205 (S31803 or S32205), which offers excellent performance at a lower cost, has led to a decline in the use of 904L for many applications where it traditionally excelled.

Corrosion Resistance:

• 904L Stainless Plate boasts exceptional resilience against various conditions, notably sulfuric acid resistance, which was a key factor in its original development. It displays remarkable resistance to warm seawater and high chloride environments, as evidenced by a PRE of 35. Its high nickel content endows it with superior resistance to stress corrosion cracking compared to standard austenitic grades. Additionally, the presence of copper enhances its resistance to sulfuric and other reducing acids, especially in highly aggressive 'mid concentration' ranges.
• The corrosion performance of 904L is typically intermediate, positioned between the ordinary austenitic grade 316L and the highly alloyed 'super austenitic' grades with 6% molybdenum and equivalent content.
• Compared to grades like 304L and 310L that lack molybdenum, 904L offers reduced resistance to strong corrosive environments.
• For optimal resistance to stress corrosion cracking in demanding conditions, 904L stainless steel should undergo solution treatment after cold working.

Heat Resistance:

• 904L stainless steel exhibits strong oxidation resistance; however, at elevated temperatures, it suffers from structural instability due to the precipitation of brittle phases like sigma. It is not advisable to use this material above 550°C. The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code specifies design stress values for 904L at 371°C.

Heat Treatment:

• Solution Treatment (Annealing): Heat 904L stainless steel to 1090-1175°C and cool rapidly. This grade cannot be hardened through thermal treatment.

Welding:

• 904L stainless steel can be welded successfully using all common methods. Due to its fully austenitic solidification, it is prone to heat cracking, especially in restricted weldments. Therefore, caution is advised. Pre-heating should be avoided, and post-weld heat treatment is generally unnecessary. Grade 904L rods and electrodes are prequalified by AS 1554.6 for welding.

Fabrication:

• Due to its high purity and low *** content, 904L does not machine as well as other grades designed for machinability. Nevertheless, it can be machined using conventional methods. Achieving a small radius of bend is straightforward, typically done cold. While subsequent annealing is usually not required, it should be considered if the fabrication will encounter severe stress corrosion cracking conditions.

Typical Applications:

• 904L Stainless Steel is ideal for: Sulphuric, phosphoric, and acetic acid processing plants; pulp and paper processing; components in gas scrubbing plants; seawater cooling equipment; oil refinery components; and wires in electrostatic precipitators.

Specified Properties:

• As per ASTM A240M, these properties are required for flat rolled products, including plates, sheets, and coils. Similar properties are listed for other products such as pipes, tubes, and bars in their respective specifications.

Our range of stainless steel sheets, often referred to as steel sheets, includes a selection of stunning finishes: brushed finish, 2B smooth finish, or 8K mirror finish.

Each finished side of our stainless steel sheets comes coated with a protective film, which can be easily peeled off after fabrication or installation. This film safeguards the material surface from wear and marks, while the backside remains unfinished.
