GENERAL PROPERTIES
Duplex 2205 is a two-phase, ferritic-austenitic stainless steel alloy containing 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. Renowned as the most commonly utilized duplex stainless steel grade, it boasts a yield strength double that of traditional austenitic grades. This material excels with exceptional fatigue strength and offers outstanding resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion, even in the most challenging environments.

CORROSION RESISTANCE
- With its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, Duplex 2205 exhibits superior corrosion resistance compared to 316 and 316L in most environments
- Its composition provides high resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in oxidizing and acidic solutions
- Resistant to chloride stress corrosion cracking and temperatures up to approximately 302°F (150°C)
- The ferrite presence ensures excellent performance in caustic environments
HEAT RESISTANCE
- Like other duplex stainless steels, Duplex 2205 demonstrates good oxidation resistance at high temperatures
- It is subject to embrittlement when exposed to temperatures above 572°F (300°C), even for short periods. Therefore, Duplex 2205 is not recommended for use above 572°F (300°C).
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- Exhibits good weldability
- Generally, welding without filler metal should be avoided to prevent excessive ferrite levels
HEAT TREATMENT
- The annealing temperature range is between 1868 and 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C)
- Cannot be hardened by heat treatment but does exhibit work-hardening properties
- Special considerations are necessary to compensate for a higher coefficient of thermal expansion to avoid warping and distortion
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
- Most Duplex 2205 producers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature of 2010 to 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). If the workpiece shape is not compact, edges may be significantly cooler than the bulk, risking cracks in the cooler regions.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING
- Duplex 2205 exhibits excellent formability across various manufacturing processes. However, its high strength can present challenges. Even with adequately powered equipment, allowances for higher spring-back due to the grade's elevated strength are essential.
MACHINABILITY
Processing Duplex 2205 is slightly more complex than the 300 series austenitic stainless steels, demanding higher cutting forces and resulting in accelerated tool wear. Key machining guidelines include: A) Employing powerful, rigid machinery with robust mounting of tools and workpieces, B) Minimizing vibration by keeping tool extensions short, C) Utilizing a suitable nose radius on tools, ensuring carbides are sharp yet strong, and D) Designing machining sequences to ensure each cut penetrates below any work-hardened layer from prior passes.
Features of 2205 Stainless Steel Coils
- Type 2205 is a duplex stainless steel combining the properties of austenitic and ferritic grades, enhanced by chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen. This composition boosts performance and corrosion resistance compared to 304 and 316 stainless steel grades. The alloy's balanced austenite/ferrite microstructure and additional elements offer superior resistance to stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and ***-induced crevice corrosion. It provides satisfactory oxidation resistance up to 980°C, though prolonged exposure between 300°C and 1000°C can make the material brittle. The versatile 2205 stainless steel strip, coil, and sheet are suitable for diverse applications.
Commonly Used Surfaces of Stainless Steel Coils
The surface finish of 201 stainless steel coil varies based on cold rolling methods and post-rolling surface treatments. Surface treatments include NO.1, 2B, 4, HL, 6, 8, BA, TR hard, heavy rolling bright 2H, and polished bright, among others:
- NO.1: This surface is achieved through hot rolling, heat treatment, and pickling of stainless steel strip, removing black oxide scale formed during these processes. The No. 1 surface is silvery white and matte, primarily used in industries that require heat and corrosion resistance without high surface gloss, such as the alcohol industry, chemical industry, and for large containers.
- 2B: The 2B surface, distinguished from the 2D surface by being lightly smoothed with a roller, is brighter and has a surface roughness Ra value between 0.1 to 0.5μm. This versatile surface is suitable for a wide range of applications, including the chemical, papermaking, petroleum, medical industries, and building curtain walls.
- TR Hard Surface: TR stainless steel, also known as hard steel, includes grades like 304 and 301 and is used for high-strength, high-hardness applications such as railway vehicles, conveyor belts, springs, and washers. Leveraging the work hardening properties of austenitic stainless steel, the strength and hardness of steel plates are enhanced through cold rolling. Unlike the 2B base surface's smoothness, the TR hard surface is achieved by rolling the hard material gently by a few percent to tens of percent, without subsequent annealing.
- Re-rolled Bright 2H: After the rolling operation, the stainless steel strip undergoes a bright annealing process. Utilizing a continuous annealing line, the strip is rapidly cooled while traveling at speeds of 60-80m/min. This advanced treatment results in a 2H re-rolled bright surface finish, ensuring superior quality and a gleaming appearance.
- No. 4: The No. 4 surface boasts an exceptional polishing effect, significantly brighter than No. 3. This finish is achieved by polishing a cold-rolled stainless steel plate with a 2D or 2B surface, followed by sanding with a belt of 150-180# grit. The surface roughness (Ra) ranges between 0.2 and 1.5μm. Widely utilized in various sectors, No. 4 is ideal for restaurants, cooking equipment, medical devices, architectural decoration, and containers.
- HL: The HL surface, commonly known as a hairline finish, is characterized by its continuous, fine abrasive texture. According to the Japanese JIS standard, this finish is achieved using a 150-240# abrasive belt. Although the Chinese GB3280 standard is less specific, the HL finish is prevalent in architectural decoration, including elevators, escalators, and building exteriors.
- No. 6: The No. 6 surface is an enhanced version of No. 4, created using a Tampico brush or W63 grit abrasive material per the GB2477 standard. This results in a surface with a refined metallic luster, soft reflection, and no imaging. Its excellent properties make it perfect for curtain walls, tassel decorations, and cooking supplies.
- BA: The BA surface is achieved through bright heat treatment post cold rolling. This involves annealing in a protective atmosphere to prevent oxidation, preserving the gloss of the cold-rolled surface. Subsequent polishing with a high-precision smooth roller enhances surface brightness, achieving a roughness of 0.05-0.1μm, close to mirror quality. BA surfaces find extensive use in food utensils, household appliances, medical instruments, automotive parts, and decorative items.
- No. 8: The mirror surface, known for maximum reflectivity and no abrasive particles, is frequently referred to as 8K. Utilizing BA material, this finish requires only polishing. The resulting surface is stunningly beautiful, making it an ideal choice for building entrances and interior decoration.
