GENERAL PROPERTIES
- Grade 430 is a ferritic, straight chromium, non-hardenable grade that combines remarkable corrosion resistance with excellent formability and practical mechanical properties. Due to its superior resistance, it is suitable for various chemical applications, but it is most commonly seen in automobile trim and appliance components.
- Grade 430F is the free-machining variant of this grade, offered in bar form for automatic screw machines. Grade 434 is the molybdenum-enhanced counterpart of Grade 430, possessing the same advantageous characteristics but with increased corrosion resistance due to the molybdenum content.
- ASTM A240/A240M outlines the specifications for Grade 430 in flat rolled products such as plate, sheet, and coil. Other forms like forgings and bar have comparable but slightly different properties as per their specific standards. The properties of Grade 430F for bar are detailed in ASTM A582.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 material offers excellent resistance to a broad range of corrosive environments, including various organic acids. Optimal corrosion resistance is achieved with high polish or ground finishes. Its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion is similar to that of Grade 304. Like all ferritic grades, 430 provides exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
- The non-free machining variant, 430F, shows significantly lower resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, much like other high sulfur free machining grades.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 can resist oxidation up to 870°C in intermittent service and 815°C in continuous service. It may become brittle at room temperature after prolonged heating in the 400-600°C range, which can be mitigated by annealing.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- Solution Annealing: Heat to 815-845°C, hold for ½ hour per 25mm of thickness, slow furnace cool to 600°C, then quickly air cool. Avoid slow cooling from 540-400°C to prevent embrittlement.
- Sub-Critical Anneal: Heat to 760-815°C, then air cool or water quench.
- This grade cannot be hardened by thermal treatment.
WELDING:
- Pre-heating at 150-200°C is recommended if welding is required.
- Embrittlement in the weld metal and heat-affected zone can be mitigated by a post-weld annealing process at 790-815°C.
- Grain refinement will not be achieved.
MACHINING:
- Machining is easier compared to standard austenitic grades such as 304.
- There is still a tendency for galling and material pick-up on the cutting tool.
- Bars that have been lightly drawn are easier to machine than those in the annealed condition.
- Grade 430F, the free machining variant of 430, offers significantly easier machinability.
FABRICATION:
- The lower work hardening rate makes bending and forming somewhat easier compared to grade 304.
- However, lower ductility restricts very severe operations.
- Severe bends should be made with the bend axis at right angles to the rolling direction.
- Severe cold heading of 430 wire is achievable.
