General properties:
- Ferritic, pure chromium, non-hardenable grade 430 steel boasts excellent formability and corrosion resistance along with practical mechanical properties. Its resistance to *** corrosion enhances its utility in various chemical applications. However, it is predominantly used in appliance parts and automotive trim.
- Grade 430F, available in bar form, is a more machinable variant suitable for automatic screw machines. Additionally, grade 434 contains molybdenum, offering the same beneficial characteristics as grade 430 while enhancing corrosion resistance due to the added molybdenum.
- ASTM A240/A240M defines the Grade 430 standards for flat-rolled products, including plates, sheets, and coils. Although similar, the specifications for other forms like bars and forgings might differ slightly. For bars, ASTM A582 outlines the Grade 430F characteristics.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 offers excellent resistance to various corrosive environments, including nitric and some organic acids. The highest corrosion resistance levels are achieved with a highly polished finish. Overall, its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion is comparable to Grade 304. Like all ferritic grades, 430 exhibits exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
- The non-free machining Grade 430F has significantly reduced resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, similar to other high-sulfur free machining grades.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 resists oxidation up to 870°C in intermittent service and 815°C in continuous service. Extended heating in the 400-600°C range may cause brittleness at room temperature, which can be alleviated through annealing.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- Solution Annealing: Heat to 815-845°C, hold for ½ hour per 25mm of thickness, then slow furnace cool to 600°C and finish with a quick air cool. Slow cooling from 540-400°C will cause embrittlement.
- Sub-Critical Anneal: Heat to 760-815°C, then air cool or water quench.
- This grade cannot be hardened by thermal treatment.
WELDING:
- Pre-heat to 150-200°C if welding is necessary.
- Post-weld annealing at 790-815°C can relieve embrittlement in the weld metal and heat-affected zone.
- Grain refinement will not occur.
MACHINING:
- Easier to machine than standard austenitic grades like 304.
- Still tends to gall and pick up on the cutting tool.
- Bars that are lightly drawn are easier to machine than those in the annealed condition.
- Grade 430F, the free machining version of 430, is significantly easier to machine.
FABRICATION:
- A lower work-hardening rate makes bending and forming easier than Grade 304.
- Lower ductility restricts very severe operations.
- Severe bends should be made with the bend axis perpendicular to the rolling direction.
- Severe cold heading of 430 wire is possible.
