CORROSION RESISTANCE:

316L Stainless Steel Rod

  • Exhibits superior resistance compared to 304 in a wide array of atmospheric conditions and many corrosive environments, courtesy of its elevated chromium.
    and molybdenum content.
  • Susceptible to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride atmospheres and stress corrosion cracking above approximately 122°F (50°C).
  • Deemed resistant to potable water with chloride concentrations up to about 1000mg/L at ambient temperatures, decreasing to around 500mg/L at.
    140°F (60°C).
  • Often referred to as the "marine grade stainless steel", but it does not withstand warm seawater.

HEAT RESISTANCE:

  • Exhibits exceptional oxidation resistance up to 1600°F (870°C) for intermittent service, and up to 1700°F (925°C) for continuous service.
  • Grade 316L showcases enhanced resistance to carbide precipitation.

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Boasts excellent weldability using all standard fusion techniques, with or without filler metals.
  • Post-weld annealing is essential for heavy welded sections in Grade 316 to achieve peak corrosion resistance, but it's unnecessary for grade 316L.

HEAT TREATMENT:

  • The recommended annealing temperature range is between 1900 to 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
  • Cannot be hardened through heat treatment.
  • Special attention is required to address a higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

  • Most manufacturers suggest a maximum forging temperature ranging from 2100°F to 2300°F.
  • Do not forge below 1700°F (927°C). The optimal
  • corrosion resistance is achieved if the forgings undergo a final annealing process.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

  • 316/316L Stainless Steel Rod types are incredibly tough and ductile, making them ideal for cold working processes such as roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing,
    bending, etc., with ease.
  • Parts that undergo severe cold forming should be annealed to alleviate stresses.

MACHINABILITY:

  • Type 316/316L Stainless Steel Rod is somewhat more challenging to machine than Type 304 due to its toughness.
  • 316/316L rods exhibit tough and robust chip characteristics.
  • Utilize chip breakers and curlers for better results.
  • Employ the largest possible tool and substantial amounts of cutting fluid.
  • Adopt heavy positive feeds at low speeds, as 316/316L work hardens quickly.
