904 alloy (N08904) stainless steel is a high-alloy austenitic product, engineered to withstand severe corrosion. Its exceptional corrosion resistance ensures longevity and durability.
904L stainless steel is a non-stabilized austenitic stainless steel with a low carbon level. This high-alloy stainless steel, enhanced with copper, exhibits superior resistance to strong reducing acids such as sulfuric acid. It is also robust against stress corrosion, cracking, and crevice corrosion. Non-magnetic, with remarkable formability, toughness, and welding capabilities, 904L grade stainless steel contains high concentrations of premium elements like molybdenum and nickel.
904L grade stainless steel excels in resisting hot seawater and chloride attacks. Its high nickel content ensures exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Adding copper enhances its resistance to sulfuric acid and other reducing agents in both corrosive and mild environments. The corrosion resistance of 904L grade spans between super austenitic steels containing 6% molybdenum and standard 316L austenitic steel. Although more susceptible than grades 304L and 310L, it must undergo solution treatment post-cold working for optimal stress corrosion cracking resistance in sensitive settings.

Grade 904L stainless steel tubes boast exceptional resistance to warm seawater and chloride attacks. This is due to their high nickel content, which fortifies them against stress corrosion cracking. Additionally, the inclusion of copper enhances their resistance to sulfuric acid and other reducing agents, making them resilient in both aggressive and mild conditions.
The corrosion resistance of Grade 904L lies between super austenitic grades (with 6% molybdenum) and standard 316L austenitic grades. However, it is less resistant than Grades 304L and 310L, which are molybdenum-free. To attain maximum resistance to stress corrosion cracking in critical environments, Grade 904L must undergo solution treatment following cold working.
Grade 904L stainless steels exhibit good oxidation resistance. However, their structural stability diminishes at high temperatures, particularly beyond 400°C, which can compromise their integrity.
Grade 904L stainless steels can be solution heat-treated between 1090 to 1175°C, followed by rapid cooling. This thermal treatment is ideal for hardening these grades.
Grade 904L stainless steels can be welded using all conventional methods without the need for pre-heat or post-weld heat treatments. However, they may experience hot cracking in constrained weldments. For welding Grade 904L, electrodes and rods that comply with AS 1554.6 are recommended.
Grade 904L stainless steel tubes are high-purity steels with low sulfur content, which can be machined using standard methods. They can be easily bent to a small radius under cold conditions. Although annealing is generally not needed, it should be performed when the fabrication is subjected to severe stress corrosion cracking conditions.
