Duplex 2205 Round Bar is a high-performance duplex ferritic-austenitic stainless steel bar enriched with 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. It stands as the most widely used duplex stainless steel grade, boasting a yield strength double that of traditional austenitic grades. This material excels in fatigue strength and offers outstanding resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion, even under the most challenging conditions.
Most Duplex 2205 manufacturers suggest a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). For non-compact workpieces, the edges may cool significantly more than the bulk, increasing the risk of cracking.
Duplex 2205 showcases good formability across various fabrications. However, its high strength may pose challenges, requiring equipment that can compensate for the higher spring-back due to the material's robust strength.
Duplex stainless steel bars, specifically the 2205 grade, present a slightly greater machining challenge compared to the 300 series austenitic stainless steels. Higher cutting forces are necessary, leading to quicker tool wear. To ensure optimal machining, follow these guidelines: A) Utilize a robust, rigid machine equipped with a highly stable tool and workpiece mount; B) Keep tool extensions minimal to reduce vibration; C) Maintain a tool nose radius only as long as needed, ensuring the carbide remains sharp while providing sufficient strength; D) Plan the machining sequence to ensure each cut depth is below the work-hardened layer from the previous pass.
