GENERAL PROPERTIES
Duplex 2205 Round Bar is a high-performance duplex ferritic-austenitic stainless steel bar enriched with 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. It stands as the most widely used duplex stainless steel grade, boasting a yield strength double that of traditional austenitic grades. This material excels in fatigue strength and offers outstanding resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion, even under the most challenging conditions.

CORROSION RESISTANCE
- Duplex 2205's elevated chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content afford it superior corrosion resistance compared to 316 and 316L in most environments.
- The elements chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen also ensure high resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in oxidizing and acidic solutions.
- Exhibits resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking, withstanding temperatures up to approximately 302°F (150°C).
- The presence of ferrite enhances Duplex 2205's performance in caustic environments.
HEAT RESISTANCE
- Similar to other duplex stainless steels, Duplex 2205 offers excellent oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.
- Prone to embrittlement at temperatures above 572°F (300°C), even after brief exposure. Hence, it's not recommended for use above this temperature threshold.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- Duplex 2205 exhibits good weldability.
- Generally, welding without filler metal is not advised, as it can lead to excessive ferrite formation.
HEAT TREATMENT
- Optimal annealing temperature ranges between 1868 to 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
- Cannot be hardened through heat treatment, though it does work-harden.
- Requires special considerations to account for its higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
Most Duplex 2205 manufacturers suggest a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). For non-compact workpieces, the edges may cool significantly more than the bulk, increasing the risk of cracking.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING
Duplex 2205 showcases good formability across various fabrications. However, its high strength may pose challenges, requiring equipment that can compensate for the higher spring-back due to the material's robust strength.
OPTIMIZED MACHINABILITY
Duplex stainless steel bars, specifically the 2205 grade, present a slightly greater machining challenge compared to the 300 series austenitic stainless steels. Higher cutting forces are necessary, leading to quicker tool wear. To ensure optimal machining, follow these guidelines: A) Utilize a robust, rigid machine equipped with a highly stable tool and workpiece mount; B) Keep tool extensions minimal to reduce vibration; C) Maintain a tool nose radius only as long as needed, ensuring the carbide remains sharp while providing sufficient strength; D) Plan the machining sequence to ensure each cut depth is below the work-hardened layer from the previous pass.
