904 alloy (N08904) stainless steel is a high-alloy austenitic product designed to withstand severe corrosion. It offers exceptional resistance to a wide range of corrosive environments.
The 904L stainless steel is a non-stabilized austenitic grade with a low carbon level, incorporating copper to enhance resistance against strong reducing acids like sulfuric acid. This high alloy is resistant to stress corrosion, cracking, and crevice corrosion. Non-magnetic with excellent formability, toughness, and welding capabilities, 904L stainless steel also contains high concentrations of molybdenum and nickel.
904L grade stainless steel offers superior resistance to hot seawater and chloride attack. The high nickel content provides excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Copper additions enhance resistance to sulfuric acid and other reducing agents. Its corrosion resistance lies between super austenitic steels with 6% molybdenum and conventional 316L austenitic steel. Treatment with solution post-cold working is required for optimal stress corrosion cracking resistance in sensitive environments.

The corrosion resistance of grade 904L stainless steel lies between that of super austenitic grades with 6% molybdenum and standard 316L austenitic grades. Although less resistant than grades 304L and 310L, which lack molybdenum, 904L requires solution treatment post-cold working to maximize stress corrosion cracking resistance in critical environments.

Heat Resistance

Grade 904L stainless steel exhibits commendable oxidation resistance. However, its structural integrity diminishes at elevated temperatures, particularly above 400°C.

Heat Treatment

Grade 904L stainless steel can undergo solution heat treatment at temperatures between 1090°C and 1175°C, followed by rapid cooling. This thermal treatment is ideal for hardening the steel grades.
