Duplex 2205 Round Bar is an exceptional duplex ferritic-austenitic stainless steel. Comprising 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel, it stands as the most widely used duplex stainless steel grade. Boasting a yield strength double that of standard austenitic grades, it also excels in fatigue strength. This steel offers superior resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice corrosion, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion, even under the harshest conditions.
Leading producers of Duplex 2205 suggest a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). If the work piece is not compact, the edges may cool significantly faster than the bulk, risking cracks in the cooler areas.
Duplex 2205 exhibits excellent formability across various fabrications. However, its exceptional high strength can present some challenges. Even when utilizing powerful equipment, it is crucial to accommodate the increased spring-back due to the grade's formidable strength.
Machining Duplex stainless steel bar 2205 is a bit more challenging than working with 300 series austenitic stainless steel, demanding higher cutting forces and leading to quicker tool wear. Consider the following machining guidelines: A) Employ a robust, rigid machine with a secure tool and workpiece mount; B) Maintain short tool extensions to reduce vibration; C) Keep the tool nose radius minimal to ensure a sharp carbide edge while maintaining adequate strength; D) Plan the machining sequence to keep the depth of cut always below the work-hardened layer from previous operations.
