Ti-6Al-4V - Grade 5 Titanium Tube

  • Titanium Alloy - (UNS R56400)

INTRODUCTION

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 Alloy Tube (UNS R56400) stands as the premier titanium alloy in the industry. This duplex alpha+beta titanium alloy ingeniously combines aluminium as an alpha stabiliser and vanadium as a beta stabiliser, offering remarkable strength even at cryogenic temperatures around 800°F (427°C). ATI Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy excels in applications like annealing, solution treatment, and ageing. It is perfect for crafting compressor blades, discs, and rings for jet engines; fuselage and space capsule components; pressure containers; *** cases; helicopter rotor hubs; fasteners; and other critical forgings demanding high strength-to-weight ratios.
  • The alloy's initial melting is performed using advanced techniques such as vacuum arc (VAR), electron beam (EB), or plasma arc hearth melting (PAM). Subsequent remelting occurs in one or two vacuum arc steps, ensuring supreme quality.

  • DAXUN 6-4™, Grade 5 Alloy offers versatile heat treatment options.
  • 1. Anneal: 1,275 - 1,400°F; (691 - 760°C), for ½ to 2 hours, followed by air or furnace cooling.
  • 2. Stress Relief Anneal: 1,000 - 1,200°F; (538 - 649°C), for 1 to 8 hours, followed by air or furnace cooling.
  • 3. Solution Heat Treatment: 1,675 - 1,750°F; (913 - 954°C), for 1 hour, followed by water quenching.
  • 4. Aging Treatment: 975 - 1,025°F; (524 - 552°C), for 4 to 8 hours, followed by air cooling.
  • In the solution treated and aged condition, optimal properties are obtained for small cross sections that are rapidly quenched.
However, larger section sizes or a delay in quenching may result in properties that are slightly lower than the optimal values.

HARDNESS

In the annealed condition, typical hardness is Rockwell C 30-34, while in the solution and aged condition, it ranges from Rockwell C 35-39.

FORGEABILITY/ FORMABILITY

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy tubes are forged at 1,750°F (954°C), with an end forging temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). For optimal results, a reduction of at least 35% is recommended.
  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy represents an engineering marvel, challenging to form at room temperature, even post-annealing. This alloy's superb mechanical integrity allows demanding forming operations such as bending and stretching to be performed on annealed material at elevated temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C). Additionally, hot sizing and forming via creep forming can be effectively carried out within the 1,000 to 1,200°F (538 to 649°C) range, all while maintaining its superior mechanical properties.

MACHINABILITY

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy showcases impressive machinability, akin to austenitic stainless steels. Leveraging slow speeds and heavy feeds, along with rigid
tooling, and substantial amounts of non-chlorinated cutting fluid, ensures optimal machining outcomes.

WELDABILITY

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5 Alloy Titanium Tube is highly weldable in both its annealed or solution and partially aged states, with post-weld heat treatment facilitating aging.
  • During welding, precautions are essential to prevent contamination by oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Fusion welding can be effectively executed within an inert gas-filled chamber or by applying an inert gas tail shield to the molten metal and adjacent hot zone. Techniques such as spot welding, seam welding, and flash welding are feasible without necessitating a protective environment.

SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy demands meticulous handling to avoid hydrogen contamination from incorrect pickling processes and the absorption of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during forging, heat treatment, and brazing. Such contamination could compromise ductility, impacting notch sensitivity and forming properties.

Ti-6Al-4V Titanium Pipe - Grade 5 Titanium Tube

Titanium Alloy - (UNS R56400)
Introduction
DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Titanium Tube, Grade 5 (UNS R56400), stands as the most celebrated titanium alloy, capitalizing on a duplex alpha+beta composition. Aluminum serves as the alpha stabilizer and vanadium as the beta stabilizer. With high strength and versatility at temperatures down to 800°F (427°C), it is ideal for applications such as compressor blades, disks, and rings for jet engines; fuselage and space capsule components; pressure vessels; *** cases; helicopter rotor hubs; fasteners; and critical components requiring an excellent strength-to-weight ratio. This alloy undergoes initial melting through vacuum arc (VAR), electron beam (EB), or plasma arc hearth melting (PAM), with remelting executed in one or two vacuum arc steps.
The alloy's initial melting employs vacuum arc (VAR), electron beam (EB), or plasma arc hearth melting (PAM) processes, followed by one or two vacuum arc remelting steps.
Specifications

Optimum Properties

Achieve optimum properties with small cross sections and rapid quenching during the solution-treated and aged conditions. Larger cross-sections or delayed quenching can lead to suboptimal properties.

Hardness

Typical hardness in the annealed condition ranges from Rockwell C 30-34. In the solution and aged condition, it elevates to approximately Rockwell C 35-39.

Forgeability/Formability

DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Titanium Tube, Grade 5 Titanium Tube is optimally forged at 1,750°F (954°C) with a final temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). A reduction of at least 35% is advised for superior results.

DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Titanium Tube, Grade 5 Titanium Tube poses challenges in forming at room temperature, even when annealed. However, severe forming operations like bending or stretching can be performed on annealed material at temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C) without altering its mechanical integrity. Creep forming is effective for hot sizing or forming between 1,000 to 1,200°F (538 to 649°C).

Machinability

DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Titanium Tube, Grade 5 Titanium Tube can be machined using techniques suited for austenitic stainless steels. Employ slow speeds, high feeds, robust tool rigidity, and ample non-chlorinated cutting fluids for best results.

Weldability

DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Titanium Tube, Grade 5 Titanium Tube exhibits excellent weldability in both annealed and solution-partially aged conditions. Post-weld heat treatment aging is effective.

Take precautions to prevent contamination with oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Fusion welding can be done in an inert gas-filled chamber or with an inert gas tail shield over the molten and nearby hot zones. Spot, seam, and flash welding are feasible without a protective atmosphere.

Special Considerations

DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Titanium Tube, Grade 5 Titanium Tube is susceptible to hydrogen contamination from improper pickling and absorption of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during various processes. This may reduce ductility and impair notch sensitivity and formability.
