CORROSION RESISTANCE:

  • Our TISCO 17-4 pH Stainless Steel Round Rod High Strength Aviation grade triumphs over corrosive attacks more effectively than traditional hardenable stainless steels.
  • It offers corrosion resistance comparable to Alloy 304 across most media environments.
  • Excellently suited for chemical, petroleum, dairy, and food processing industries due to its superior corrosion resistance.
  • Note: Extended exposure to stagnant seawater may lead to crevice or pitting attack.

WELDABILITY:

  • Easily weldable using most conventional fusion and resistance welding methods.
  • Avoid oxyacetylene welding for optimal results.
  • Generally, no pre-heating is necessary before welding.
  • Keep inter-pass temperatures below 248°F for best results.
  • Enhanced toughness can be achieved in the weld post complete heat treatment.

ELEVATED TEMPERATURE USE:

  • Remarkable resistance to oxidation up to approximately 1100°F.
  • However, prolonged exposure to high temperatures may decrease toughness in precipitation-hardened conditions.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

  • For forging, uniformly heat to 2150-2200°F and maintain for half an hour per inch of thickness.
  • Ideal hot forming temperatures are between 650-900°F when the steel is in its austenitic phase.
  • Post-forging, re-heat treatment at 1875-1925°F is essential for optimal hardening conditions.
  • Cool forgings to below 90°F to ensure refined grain structure.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

  • Alloy 17-4 is suited for mild operations in its annealed state due to material hardness.
  • For more severe cold working, heat treat the material to condition H1150 to prevent cracking.
  • A bend radius greater than 7T is often required.
  • To enhance stress corrosion resistance post cold forming, re-aging at the precipitation-hardening temperature is recommended.

MACHINABILITY:

  • Machining is feasible in both solution-treated and precipitation-hardened conditions.
