What Is Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel?
Duplex 2507 stainless steel is a super duplex alloy with a low carbon content (up to 0.03%) and a composition enriched with chromium (~25%), nickel (~7%), and molybdenum (~4%). Engineered to meet the rigorous demands of applications that require exceptional strength and superior corrosion resistance, Duplex 2507 is ideal for use in chemical process equipment, the petrochemical sector, and seawater machinery. Its resistance to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking is noteworthy. Thanks to its high levels of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen, it offers outstanding resistance to pitting, crevice, and general corrosion.
How Is Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel Made?
- The creation of Duplex 2507 stainless steel mirrors the processes used for other high-alloy steels. The journey begins in an electric arc furnace where scrap steel is melted and the desired alloys are added. The molten steel is then moved to an AOD (argon oxygen decarburization) converter for critical processes such as decarburization, sulfur refinement, and gas elimination.
- During the AOD process, nitrogen is generally introduced to the steel. The molten steel then proceeds to the ladle furnace where inclusions are finely adjusted.
- Following the initial stages, the molten steel is transferred to the casting operation which can produce either solitary ingots or continuously produced blooms. These solid steel forms are further refined by reheating and forging or rolling to achieve the desired thickness. The steel then undergoes solution annealing, a thermal treatment for ensuring a homogeneous internal structure, followed by a water quenching procedure.
- Duplex 2507 pipe materials can be shaped using either hot or cold forming processes. For hot forming, an optimal temperature range of 1024°C to 1232°C is recommended. Post hot forming, solution annealing at temperatures between 1052°C and 1125°C should be carried out, followed by rapid water quenching. Cold forming methods, such as bending, deep drawing, extruding, and pressing, also necessitate a subsequent heat treatment involving solution annealing and quenching to maintain the steel's properties.
How Does Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel Differ From Duplex Steel?
- Duplex 2507 stands out as a super duplex stainless steel, featuring a microstructure that equally balances ferrite and austenite phases. This dual-phase structure bestows Duplex 2507 with high corrosion resistance and robust mechanical strength, combining the best attributes of each phase. Duplex steels offer varying levels of corrosion resistance, particularly against localized forms such as pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking. The exact resistance level depends on the specific grade and alloy composition. Duplex stainless steels are categorized into four groups based on their PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number). Among these, super duplex stainless steels, like Duplex 2507, boast a PREN range of 38 to 45.
