CORROSION RESISTANCE:

  • Our High Strength 17-4 pH Stainless Steel Round Bar boasts superior resistance to corrosive attacks, surpassing any standard hardenable stainless steels.
  • It offers corrosion resistance comparable to Alloy 304 across most media.
  • Ideal for use in chemical, petroleum, dairy, and food process industries due to its reliable corrosion resistance.
  • However, prolonged exposure to stagnant sea water may lead to crevice or pitting attacks.

WELDABILITY:

  • Our product can be successfully welded using most common fusion and resistance methods, ensuring robust and reliable joins.
  • Note that oxyacetylene welding is not recommended for this material.
  • Typically, there is no need for pre-heating before welding.
  • Maintain an inter-pass temperature below 248°F for optimal results.
  • Achieve better toughness in the weld with a complete heat treatment process.

ELEVATED TEMPERATURE USE:

  • Exhibits excellent oxidation resistance at temperatures up to approximately 1100°F.
  • Be aware that long-term exposure to high temperatures may reduce toughness in the precipitation-hardened conditions.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

  • To forge, heat uniformly to 2150-2200°F and maintain temperature for half an hour per inch of material.
  • The preferred hot forming temperature range is 650-900°F, where the steel maintains its austenitic structure.
  • For optimal hardening, re-heat treat forgings at 1875-1925°F.
  • Cool forgings below 90°F to achieve grain refinement for enhanced properties.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

  • Alloy 17-4 is suitable for mild operations when in the annealed (solution treated) condition due to its inherent hardness.
  • For severe cold working, heat treat the material to condition H1150 to prevent cracking.
  • A bend radius greater than 7T is often necessary for effective forming.
  • Post cold forming, re-aging at the precipitation-hardening temperature is recommended to enhance stress corrosion resistance.

MACHINABILITY:

  • The alloy can be effectively machined in both solution-treated and precipitation-hardened conditions.
