What are 904L's best qualities?
- 904L stainless steel boasts a low carbon composition, which significantly enhances its resistance to powerful acids such as sulphuric acid due to its high copper content. The significant nickel concentration in 904L ensures exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Additionally, it offers unparalleled resistance to crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking, common issues in other steel varieties. This makes 904L an ideal choice for a plethora of challenging environments, including warm waters and chloride exposure. It is perfectly suited for both moderate and aggressive conditions.
- 904L stainless steel delivers extraordinary heat resistance, enduring temperatures up to 400°C. Heat treatable between 1090 to 1175°C with rapid cooling, this heat treatment process is highly effective for hardening 904L steel.
- Thanks to its composition, 904L stainless steel is nonmagnetic. It also offers excellent weldability, formability, and toughness under various conditions.
- 904L steel can be welded using standard methods without the necessity for pre-heat or post-weld heat treatments.
What is 904L used for?
904L stainless steel is utilized in the construction of high-end watches due to its high purity and low sulfur content. Industrially, it is valued for several applications, including:

Fabrication Data
- Alloy 904L can be effortlessly welded and processed using standard shop fabrication practices.
Cold Forming
- 904L exhibits high ductility and is easily formable. However, the inclusion of molybdenum and nitrogen necessitates more robust processing equipment compared to standard 304/304L grades.
Hot Forming
- Hot working procedures for 904L require temperatures between 1562 to 2102°F (850-1150°C). It's generally followed by solution annealing and quenching; however, if hot forming ceases at over 2012°F (1100°C) with immediate quenching, it can be used without further heat treatment. Proper quenching of the entire workpiece from above 2012°F (1100°C) is crucial. If partial heating or cooling drops below this temperature or cooling is too slow, hot working must be followed by solution annealing and quenching. Solution annealing should be performed at 1940-2084°F (1060-1140°C).
Machining
- The cold work hardening rate of Alloy 904L is higher than that of 410 and 304 stainless steels, making it less machinable.
Welding
- Most conventional welding methods are compatible with Alloy 904L. The uniform austenitic structure of austenitic plate materials ensures an equitable distribution of alloying elements. Post-welding, elements like molybdenum, chromium, and nickel redistribute during solidification, which may reduce corrosion resistance in certain scenarios. However, in 904L, segregation is less pronounced, and it is typically welded with filler metal of the same composition as the base metal, though it can also be welded without filler metal.
- The recommended welding consumables for 904L are 20 25 CuL covered electrode and 20 25 CuL wire.
