Description of the Stainless Steel Plate Surface

Finish Designation Method and degree of finish
No.1 After hot rolling, heat treatment, pickling or other equivalent treatment is applied.
No.2D Annealing and pickling are performed after cold rolling; material is soft with surface of silver-white luster; used for general applications and deep drawing.
No.2B After 2D finish, skin pass rolling is performed to obtain a more suitable luster; the surface becomes very exquisite; used for general applications.
No.3 Intermediate 100-120 grit finish; used for applications in which surface polishing is performed after shaping.
No.4 General 150-180 grit finish; used for restaurants and kitchen equipment and tools.
#240 240 grit finish; used when a finer finish than No. 4 is required; typically for restaurants and kitchen equipment and tools.
#320 320 grit finish polished product.
HL This finish is performed by continuous linear polishing using an abrasive of appropriate grain size; mainly used for architectural applications.
BA Achieved by performing bright annealing after cold rolling and then skin pass rolling to obtain even greater reflectance; provides excellent corrosion resistance; used for household appliances, kitchen equipment, and automobiles.
8K Through multiple grinding, it achieves very high brightness and smoothness, like a mirror.

General Properties
Alloy 420 Stainless Steel Plate is a robust, hardenable martensitic stainless steel, evolved from Alloy 410. Much like its predecessor, it boasts a minimum of 12% chromium, ensuring substantial corrosion resistance. The inclusion of more carbon in Alloy 420 enhances both its strength and hardness, making it a superior choice where these properties are paramount. Post-annealing, it offers considerable ductility and can be tempered to achieve a minimum Rockwell hardness of 50 HRC, the highest among the 12% chromium grades. While welding is uncommon due to its hardening characteristics, it remains a possibility. Designed for high hardness, martensitic stainless steels, including Alloy 420, may exhibit reduced corrosion resistance compared to conventional austenitic grades and have limited operational utility at sub-zero temperatures and high temperatures due to ductility loss and strength degradation from over-tempering. Optimal corrosion resistance is achieved when the metal is hardened and subsequently ground or polished to a smooth finish.

Applications:
420 stainless steel is ideal for applications necessitating superior corrosion resistance and hardness. It is rarely employed at temperatures exceeding 800oF (427oC) due to rapid hardening and diminished corrosion resistance. Common applications of the 420 alloy include:

Corrosion resistance:
Less resistant than austenitic grades and 17% chromium ferritic alloys
Good resistance to atmosphere, foods, fresh water, and mild acids when hardened
Resistance diminishes in the annealed state
Surface finish: smooth
Heat resistance:
Not suitable for use above relevant tempering temperatures due to diminished mechanical properties
Scaling temperature is approximately 1202 o F (650 o C)
Machinability
Hard, elongated chip buildup.
Comparable to machining high carbon tool steels
Welding
Welding is generally avoided due to air hardening characteristics
Preheat to 300-400 F before welding
Temper for 2 hours subsequent to welding
Hot Working
Gradual ramp-up to 1400 F, then to 2000-2200 F is highly recommended
Post-furnace work: cool slowly to prevent cracking
Reheating is necessary to maintain working temperature above 1600 F.
Cold Working
Withstands only light cold working.
Aggressive forming may lead to cracking.
Annealing
Anneal at 1550-1650 F (843-900 C)
Allow furnace to cool gradually.
Tempering
Temper at 300-400 F
Air cool for maximum hardness and corrosion resistance.
Hardening
Soak at 1850-1950 F, followed by quenching in hot oil.
