SPECIFICATIONS
AMS 4928 - Bars, Forgings, and Forging Stock (Annealed)
AMS 4965 - Bars, Forgings (Solution treated and aged)
AMS 4967 - Bars, Forgings (Annealed, Heat Treatable)
HEAT TREATMENT
- When the highest levels of hardness, tensile strength, and fatigue strength are required, annealing can be executed at temperatures between 1,700-1,900°F (927 - 1,038°C).
DAXUN 6-4™ Grade 5 alloy offers multiple heat treatment options to suit varied requirements. - 1. Anneal: 1,275 -1,400°F; (691 - 760°C), ½ to 2 hours, air or furnace cooled.
- 2. Stress Relief Anneal: 1,000 -1,200°F; (538 - 649°C), 1 to 8 hours, air or furnace cooled.
- 3. Solution Heat Treat: 1,675 -1,750°F; (913 - 954°C), 1 hour, followed by water quenching.
- 4. Aging: 975 -1,025°F; (524 - 552°C), 4 to 8 hours, then air cooled.
In the solution treated and aged condition, rapid quenching of smaller sections yields optimal properties, whereas larger sections and/or delayed quenching might result in less than optimal properties.
HARDNESS
Typical hardness in the annealed condition ranges from Rockwell C 30-34, while in the solution and aged condition, it increases to about Rockwell C 35-39.
Forgeability/Formability
- Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar is optimally forged at 1,750°F (954°C) with a final forging temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). A minimum of 35% reduction is recommended to achieve the best properties.
- The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar is renowned for its formidable strength and durability, making it a challenge to form at room temperature, even when annealed. Remarkably, severe forming operations such as bending or stretching can be performed on annealed material at elevated temperatures of up to 1,200°F (649°C) without compromising its mechanical integrity. For hot sizing or forming, creep forming processes can be effectively utilized within a temperature range of 1,000 - 1,200°F (538 - 649°C).
Machinability
The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar exhibits exceptional machinability using austenitic stainless steel techniques. This involves employing slow machining speeds, high feed rates, and rigid tools. The process is further optimized with the extensive use of non-chlorinated cutting fluids to ensure precision and quality.
Weldability
The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy rod is highly weldable in both annealed and solution-aged conditions, with aging taking place during post-weld heat treatment. It is essential to prevent contamination by oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Fusion welding should be conducted in an inert gas-filled chamber or with inert gas shielding the weld zone. Techniques such as spot, seam, and flash welding may be executed without requiring a protective atmosphere.
Special Considerations
Special care must be taken with the Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 titanium alloy rod to avoid contamination. Improper pickling can introduce hydrogen, while oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon can permeate during forging, heat treating, or brazing. Such contamination can result in reduced ductility, affecting notch sensitivity and forming characteristics adversely.

Grade 2 Titanium Rod - Excellence in every rod.
Corrosion Resistance - Protecting your investments with superior corrosion resistance.
Caution: Titanium should be avoided in strong reducing acids, fluoride solutions, pure oxygen, or anhydrous *** environments.
General Corrosion - Outstanding performance in diverse media.
The general corrosion rates for Grade 2 titanium are detailed in Table 1. CP Titanium showcases exceptional corrosion resistance in numerous environments such as:
- Seawater and brines
- Inorganic salts
- Moist *** gas
- Alkaline solutions
- Oxidizing acids
- Organics and organic acids
- Sulfur compounds
Crevice Corrosion - Unmatched resilience in challenging conditions.
CP Titanium displays remarkable resistance to crevice corrosion in salt solutions, outperforming stainless steels. It remains crevice corrosion-free at temperatures below 80°C (176°F), even in highly chlorinated environments.
Stress Corrosion Cracking - Exceptional SCC resistance.
Grade 2 titanium offers superb resistance to stress corrosion cracking in hot chloride solutions and is entirely immune to SCC in seawater.
Erosion Corrosion - Durability in dynamic conditions.
Titanium demonstrates outstanding resistance to erosion in flowing environments.
Experience the resilience of our materials withstanding seawater velocities up to 130 ft/sec (40 m/sec) with negligible impact. Even in the presence of abrasive particles like sand, the corrosion resistance remains robust.
Hydrogen Embrittlement
Titanium's integrity remains intact with no significant hydrogen absorption when exposed to seawater, even under elevated temperatures. Hydrogen absorption typically occurs only under the following precise conditions:
- When the pH is < 3 or > 12
- When the temperature exceeds 176°F (80°C)
- When a mechanism for hydrogen generation, such as a galvanic couple or impressed current, is present.
Bio-Corrosion
Titanium alloys exhibit remarkable immunity to microbiologically influenced corrosion. Despite no toxicity towards marine organisms, biofouling can occur in seawater. Effective mitigation strategies include chlorination or increasing the water velocity through heat exchangers.
Corrosion Fatigue
Unlike many other materials, titanium's fatigue performance remains unaffected by seawater. Fatigue endurance limits and *** growth rates are consistent in both air and seawater environments.
Galvanic Corrosion
Positioned towards the noble end of the galvanic series near stainless steels, titanium generally acts as a cathode when paired with other metals. This ensures titanium remains unaffected by galvanic corrosion while potentially accelerating the corrosion of the coupled metal. Pairing with noble metals like graphite further enhances titanium's passivity.
Fatigue Properties
Grade 2 Titanium Rod showcases exceptional fatigue properties, with no degradation in the presence of seawater. Whether tested in air or seawater, fatigue endurance limits and *** growth rates remain consistent.
Weldability
CP2 Grade Titanium Rod offers excellent weldability when appropriate precautions are taken. Due to titanium's reactivity, an inert gas shield must protect both the OD and ID of the rod, ensuring it is free from grease or oil contamination.
Typically, Grade 2 Titanium Rod is welded using manual or automatic TIG welding, with or without filler wire. Employing low heat input helps minimize the heat-affected zone. Post-weld heat treatment is generally not required for Titanium Rod.
