GENERAL PROPERTIES
Duplex 2205 is a remarkable two-phase, ferritic-austenitic stainless steel, uniquely alloyed with 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. As the most prevalent duplex stainless steel grade, it boasts a yield strength double that of standard austenitic grades. This incredible steel also excels in fatigue strength and exhibits outstanding resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion, even in the most challenging environments.

CORROSION RESISTANCE
- With its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, Duplex 2205 sets a benchmark in corrosion resistance, surpassing 316 and 316L in most environments.
- The robust composition provides excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in oxidizing and acidic solutions.
- Duplex 2205 is highly resistant to chloride stress corrosion cracking and withstands temperatures up to approximately 302°F (150°C).
- The ferrite content enhances its performance in caustic environments.
HEAT RESISTANCE
- Similar to other duplex stainless steels, Duplex 2205 exhibits commendable oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.
- However, it is susceptible to embrittlement when exposed to temperatures above 572°F (300°C), even for short durations, and thus is not recommended for use beyond this threshold.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- Duplex 2205 possesses excellent weldability.
- Generally, it should not be welded without filler metal to avoid excessive ferrite content.
HEAT TREATMENT
- The annealing temperature range for Duplex 2205 is between 1868 to 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
- This alloy cannot be hardened by heat treatment but does work-harden.
- Special considerations must be taken to accommodate its higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
- Most producers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). For non-compact workpieces, ensure the edges are adequately heated to prevent cracking in cooler regions.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING
- Duplex 2205 has demonstrated remarkable formability across various fabrication methods. However, the material's high strength can present challenges. Even when equipment possesses sufficient power, allowances must be made for increased spring-back due to the grade's inherent high strength.
MACHINABILITY
Duplex 2205 presents a slightly higher degree of processing difficulty compared to the 300 series austenitic stainless steels, necessitating greater cutting forces and resulting in accelerated tool wear. Key machining guidelines include: A) Utilize powerful, rigid machines with robust tool and workpiece mounting, B) Reduce vibration by minimizing tool extension, C) Employ a minimal nose radius on the tool for carbides with a sharp edge while ensuring adequate strength, and D) Design machining sequences to ensure each cut reaches below the work-hardened layer from previous passes.

- Type 2205 is a state-of-the-art duplex (austenitic/ferritic) stainless steel enriched with chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen, which significantly enhances performance and corrosion resistance over 304 and 316 stainless steels. What are the commonly used surfaces of stainless steel coils?
The surface finish of 201 stainless steel coils can vary significantly based on the cold rolling processing techniques and subsequent surface treatments. Common treatments include NO.1, 2B, 4, HL, 6, 8, BA, TR hard, heavy rolling bright 2H, polished bright, and other specialized finishes:
- NO.1: This surface is achieved through a combination of hot rolling, heat treatment, and pickling of the stainless steel strip. It effectively removes the black oxide scale formed during these processes. The No. 1 surface is distinguished by its silvery white, matte appearance and is primarily employed in industries where heat and corrosion resistance are paramount, such as the alcohol and chemical industries, as well as large containers where high surface gloss is not required.
- 2B: Unlike the 2D finish, the 2B surface undergoes additional smoothing with a light roller, resulting in a brighter finish. The surface roughness Ra value, measured by equipment, ranges from 0.1 to 0.5μm, making it highly adaptable for various processing types. This finish is widely used in industries such as chemical, papermaking, petroleum, medical, and is also favored in construction for building curtain walls.
- TR hard surface: TR stainless steel, also known as hard steel, includes grades such as 304 and 301. It is used in applications requiring high strength and hardness, including railway vehicles, conveyor belts, springs, and washers. The concept leverages the work-hardening properties of austenitic stainless steel to enhance the strength and hardness of steel plates through cold working techniques like rolling. The hard material undergoes gentle rolling by a few to several tens of percent, replacing the flatness of the 2B base surface without subsequent annealing, resulting in the TR hard surface characteristic of the cold rolling process.
- Re-rolled bright 2H: After the meticulous rolling operation, our premium stainless steel strip undergoes a bright annealing process. Employing a continuous annealing line, we ensure rapid cooling of the strip, maintaining a swift travel speed of 60-80m/min. This advanced process provides a stunning 2H re-rolled bright surface finish, epitomizing quality and precision.
- No. 4: The No. 4 surface boasts an exceptional polishing effect, offering a brighter finish compared to No. 3. Achieved by polishing the cold-rolled stainless steel plate featuring a 2D or 2B surface, it is then refined with a sanding belt of 150-180# grit. The surface roughness (Ra) is meticulously measured between 0.2 and 1.5μm. Widely cherished for applications in restaurants, cooking equipment, medical equipment, architectural decoration, containers, and more, the No. 4 surface is synonymous with versatility and elegance.
- HL: The HL surface, often referred to as a hairline finish, meets the stringent Japanese JIS standard. This finish is produced through continuous hairline abrasive treatment using a 150-240# abrasive belt. Although the Chinese GB3280 standard is less definitive, the HL finish is prevalent in architectural decoration, notably in elevators, escalators, and exterior walls, offering a sleek and modern aesthetic.
- No. 6: Building upon the No. 4 surface, the No. 6 finish undergoes further refinement with a Tampico brush or W63 grit abrasive material as per GB2477 standards. This process yields a surface with excellent metallic luster, a soft, weakly reflective sheen, and no imaging. Ideal for curtain walls, tassel decoration, and cooking supplies, the No. 6 surface blends performance with sophistication.
- BA: The BA surface undergoes bright heat treatment following cold rolling. This involves annealing in a protective atmosphere to prevent oxidation, preserving the gloss of the cold-rolled surface. Polished with a high-precision smooth roller, the surface achieves outstanding brightness, with surface roughness measured at 0.05-0.1μm, nearing mirror quality. BA surfaces are utilized in diverse applications, including food utensils, household appliances, medical equipment, automotive parts, and decorative elements.
- No. 8: The mirror finish, known for its maximum reflectivity and absence of abrasive particles, is highly esteemed in the stainless steel deep processing industry, often referred to as 8K board. This finish is derived from BA material, requiring only polishing to achieve a dazzling appearance. The mirror surface is a preferred choice for building entrances and interior decoration, exuding elegance and grandeur.
