Type 201 stainless steel is an austenitic chromium-nickel-manganese alloy engineered to conserve nickel, offering a cost-effective alternative to conventional Cr-Ni stainless steels like 301 and 304. Instead of nickel, it uses manganese and nitrogen. While it cannot be hardened by heat treatment, it achieves high tensile strength through cold working. In its annealed state, Type 201 is non-magnetic but becomes magnetic after cold working. Known for its mid-range properties, 201 stainless steel is ideal for appliances, cookers, sinks, kitchen utensils, and catering equipment, as well as automotive parts, fixtures, carriages, and window trim. Though structurally robust, it may not be suitable for outdoor structural applications due to susceptibility to pitting and crevice corrosion from seawater.
