Type 201 stainless steel is an austenitic chromium-nickel-manganese alloy designed to minimize nickel usage, presenting a cost-effective alternative to traditional Cr-Ni stainless steels like 301 and 304. By substituting nickel with manganese and nitrogen, Type 201 maintains high tensile strength through cold working, though it cannot be hardened by heat treatment. Initially non-magnetic, it gains magnetism after cold working. This mid-range stainless steel variant is ideal for appliances, kitchen utensils, sinks, catering equipment, automotive parts, and trim, boasting significant structural strength. However, its susceptibility to pitting and crevice corrosion, particularly from seawater, limits its use in outdoor structural applications.
