Type 904L is a high-alloy austenitic stainless steel celebrated for its superior corrosion resistance. The 904L alloy (UNS N08904), a super austenitic stainless steel, is highly versatile, suitable for numerous processing environments, and offers moderate to high corrosion resistance. Its advanced composition, featuring high chromium and nickel content along with molybdenum and copper, guarantees excellent to outstanding corrosion resistance. Boasting a highly alloyed chemistry with 25% nickel and 4.5% molybdenum, 904L surpasses 316L and 317L molybdenum-reinforced stainless steels in chloride stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and general corrosion resistance. Initially designed to endure dilute sulfuric acid conditions, the 904L alloy also resists most organic and inorganic acids, including hot phosphoric acid. This alloy is highly weldable and can be easily manipulated with standard shop fabrication procedures.

Fabrication Data
- Alloy 904L boasts ease of welding and processing with standard shop fabrication methods, providing flexibility and efficiency in manufacturing.
Cold Forming
- 904L exhibits high ductility and forms easily. However, its higher molybdenum and nitrogen content necessitates more powerful processing equipment compared to standard 304/304L grades, highlighting its robust nature.
Hot Forming
- Hot working of 904L stainless steel requires specific temperature ranges between 1562 and 2102°F (850-1150°C). Post hot working, solution annealing and quenching are generally advised. If hot forming ceases above 2012°F (1100°C) with immediate quenching, the material may be used without needing further heat treatment. Ensuring the entire workpiece is quenched from temperatures above 2012°F (1100°C) is crucial. If partial heating or slower cooling occurs below this temperature, a solution anneal and quench is imperative. Solution annealing for 904L should occur at 1940-2084°F (1060-1140°C).
Machining
- The machining of Alloy 904L is more challenging than 410 and 304 stainless steels due to its cold work hardening rate, but its superior properties often outweigh this complexity.
Welding
- Alloy 904L is compatible with most conventional welding techniques. Its austenitic structure ensures an even distribution of alloying elements such as molybdenum, chromium, and nickel, minimizing corrosion risks post-welding. The alloy typically uses filler metal of the same composition as the base material, though it can also be welded without filler material.
- For welding 904L, the recommended consumables are 20 25 CuL covered electrodes or 20 25 CuL wires, ensuring optimal performance and consistency.
