Leading Stainless Steel Sheet Suppliers in China

Grade 904L:

• Austenitic stainless steel sheet of grade 904L is a non-stabilized, high-alloy, low-carbon steel. The inclusion of copper significantly enhances its resistance to strong reducing acids, especially sulfuric acid. Additionally, it offers exceptional defense against chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking and pitting/crevice corrosion.
• This grade boasts outstanding formability and weldability and remains non-magnetic under all conditions. Its austenitic structure ensures exceptional toughness, even at cryogenic temperatures.
• 904L stainless steel is enriched with significant quantities of high-cost elements like nickel and molybdenum. Although Duplex stainless steel 2205 (S31803 or S32205) now frequently serves similar applications at a reduced cost, the robust performance of 904L in numerous environments remains unparalleled. However, its usage has dwindled due to economic considerations.

Corrosion Resistance:

• Originally developed for sulfuric acid resistance, 904L stainless steel offers outstanding resilience across diverse conditions, including warm seawater and high chloride environments, as evidenced by its PRE of 35. Its high nickel content ensures superior resistance to stress corrosion cracking when compared to standard austenitic grades. The inclusion of copper enhances its performance against sulfuric and other reducing acids, particularly in highly aggressive mid-concentration ranges.
• In terms of corrosion resistance, 904L stands between the standard austenitic grade 316L and the highly alloyed 'super austenitic' grades, which contain 6% molybdenum and equivalent elements.
• 904L demonstrates superior resistance compared to molybdenum-free grades like 304L and 310L, although it offers less resistance in extremely harsh environments.
• For optimal resistance to stress corrosion cracking in demanding conditions, it is recommended to solution treat the steel following cold work.

Heat Resistance:

• 904L exhibits strong oxidation resistance but suffers from structural instability at high temperatures, such as the precipitation of brittle phases like sigma. It is not recommended for use above 550°C. The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code specifies design stress values for 904L up to 371°C.

Heat Treatment:

• Solution Treatment (Annealing): Heat the alloy to 1090-1175°C and cool rapidly. This grade cannot be hardened through thermal treatment.

Welding:

• 904L can be welded successfully using all common methods. However, due to its fully austenitic solidification, it is prone to heat cracking, especially in restricted weldments. Caution is advised, and pre-heating should be avoided. Typically, post-weld heat treatment is not required. Grade 904L rods and electrodes are prequalified by AS 1554.6 for welding.

Fabrication:

• Despite being a high purity, low sulfur grade, 904L does not machine as easily as other grades designed for better machinability. It can, however, be machined using conventional methods. Achieving a small radius of bend is straightforward, usually performed cold. If the fabrication will be exposed to severe stress corrosion cracking conditions, annealing should be considered, although it is typically unnecessary.

Typical Applications:

• 904L stainless steel is ideal for a variety of applications, including sulfuric, phosphoric, and acetic acid processing plants, pulp and paper processing, gas scrubbing plant components, seawater cooling equipment, oil refinery components, and wires in electrostatic precipitators.

Specified Properties:

• As per ASTM A240M standards, these properties are specified for flat-rolled products like plates, sheets, and coils. Similar properties apply to other forms such as pipe, tube, and bar, although they may vary slightly according to their individual specifications.

904L Stainless Steel Sheets in a Variety of Finishes

Our stainless steel sheets are available in an array of exquisite finishes: brushed, 2B smooth, or 8K mirror. These finishes provide both aesthetic appeal and functional durability.

To protect the surface of our stainless steel sheets from wear and marks during fabrication or installation, each sheet is coated with a protective film on the finished side, which can be easily removed. The reverse side remains unfinished.
