SPECIFICATIONS: Industry-Leading Standards for Quality Assurance.

AMS 4928 - Standards for Bars, Forgings, and Forging Stock (Annealed).

AMS 4965 - Detailed Specifications for Bars and Forgings (Solution Treated and Aged).

AMS 4967 - Comprehensive Guidelines for Bars and Forgings (Annealed, Heat Treatable).

HEAT TREATMENT: Tailored Solutions for Superior Performance.

  • For applications requiring high hardness, tensile strength, and fatigue resistance, our annealing process operates between 1,700-1,900°F (927 - 1,038°C).
The versatile DAXUN 6-4™ Grade 5 alloy offers multiple heat treatment options to meet diverse needs.
  • 1. Anneal: Conducted at 1,275 -1,400°F (691 - 760°C) for ½ to 2 hours, followed by air or furnace cooling.
  • 2. Stress Relief Anneal: Executed at 1,000 -1,200°F (538 - 649°C) for 1 to 8 hours, then air or furnace cooled.
  • 3. Solution Heat Treat: Performed at 1,675 -1,750°F (913 - 954°C) for 1 hour, concluded with a water quench.
  • 4. Aging: Carried out at 975 -1,025°F (524 - 552°C) for 4 to 8 hours, followed by air cooling.

For optimal properties, rapid quenching of small sections in the solution treated and aged state is essential. Larger sections or delayed quenching may result in suboptimal properties.

HARDNESS: Reliable and Consistent Performance Metrics.

In the annealed condition, typical hardness ranges from Rockwell C 30-34. In the solution and aged state, it ranges from Rockwell C 35-39.

Forgeability/Formability: Optimized Processes for Superior Results.

  • Our Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bars are forged at 1,750°F (954°C) with a final forging temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). For optimal properties, a minimum 35% reduction is recommended.
  • Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar presents challenges in forming at room temperature, even when annealed. For severe forming operations like bending or stretching, annealed material can be processed at temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C) without compromising mechanical properties. Achieve hot sizing or forming through creep forming within a range of 1,000 - 1,200°F (538 - 649°C).

Machinability

Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar can be precisely machined using austenitic stainless steel methods. Employ slow machining speeds, high feeds, rigid tools, and ample amounts of non-chlorinated cutting fluids for optimal results.

Weldability

Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy rod offers excellent weldability in both annealed and solution/partially aged conditions, with aging post-weld heat treatment. Prevent contamination from oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Fusion welding can be executed in an inert gas chamber or with inert gas to weld the molten metal and adjacent zones. Spot, seam, and flash welding are possible without a protective atmosphere.

Special Considerations

Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 titanium alloy rod can be contaminated with hydrogen during improper pickling, and with oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during forging, heat treating, or brazing. This can lead to loss of ductility, negatively impacting notch sensitivity and forming characteristics.

Grade 2 Titanium Rod

Corrosion Resistance

Titanium should not be used with strong reducing acids, fluoride solutions, pure oxygen, or anhydrous ***.

General Corrosion

The general corrosion rates for Grade 2 titanium in various media are detailed in Table 1. CP titanium showcases exceptional corrosion resistance across multiple environments, including:

  • Seawater and Brines
  • Inorganic Salts
  • Moist *** Gas
  • Alkaline Solutions
  • Oxidizing Acids
  • Organics and Organic Acids
  • Sulfur Compounds

Crevice Corrosion

CP titanium demonstrates excellent resistance to crevice corrosion in salt solutions, outperforming stainless steels. It shows no crevice corrosion at temperatures below 80°C (176°F) regardless of pH, even under highly chlorinated conditions.

Stress Corrosion Cracking

Grade 2 titanium offers remarkable resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in hot chloride solutions and is immune to SCC in seawater.

Erosion Corrosion

Titanium exhibits outstanding resistance to erosion in flowing environments.
Seawater with velocities up to 130 ft/sec (40 m/sec) exhibits negligible effects on the material. Even the presence of abrasive particles, such as sand, only has a minimal impact on corrosion.

Hydrogen Embrittlement

Titanium shows no significant absorption of hydrogen when exposed to seawater, even at elevated temperatures. Hydrogen absorption typically occurs only under the following conditions:

  1. pH < 3 or > 12
  2. Temperature exceeds 176°F (80°C)
  3. A mechanism exists for hydrogen generation, such as a galvanic couple or impressed current.

Bio-Corrosion

Titanium alloys exhibit remarkable immunity to all forms of microbiologically influenced corrosion. Although biofouling can occur in seawater due to titanium's non-toxicity towards marine organisms, this can be minimized by chlorination or increasing the water velocity through heat exchangers.

Corrosion Fatigue

Unlike many other materials, titanium does not experience a reduction in fatigue performance in seawater. Both fatigue endurance limits and fatigue *** growth rates remain consistent whether tested in air or seawater.

Galvanic Corrosion

In the galvanic series, titanium is positioned near the noble end, close to stainless steels, typically acting as the cathode when coupled with other metals. Therefore, titanium remains unaffected by galvanic corrosion but may accelerate the corrosion of the coupled metal. When paired with more noble metals, such as graphite, titanium's passivity is further enhanced.

Fatigue Properties

Grade 2 Titanium Rod, unlike many other materials, does not degrade in fatigue properties when exposed to seawater. Its fatigue endurance limits and fatigue *** growth rates remain unchanged, whether tested in air or seawater.

Weldability

CP2 Grade Titanium Rod is highly weldable with the necessary precautions. Due to the reactive nature of titanium, an inert gas shield must be applied to both the OD and ID of the rod. The material should be free of any grease or oil contamination.

Grade 2 Titanium Rod is typically welded using manual or automatic TIG welding, with or without filler wire. Low heat input is recommended to minimize the heat-affected zone size. Post-weld heat treatment is not usually required for Titanium Rod.
